Although I resist appellations such as the single best, I will humor you and say the Musical Box, which was my first thought. So many other great tracks have also been mentioned.

So difficult to pick just one... Can-Utility, Firth of Fifth or Cinema Show.

Those two outstanding songs are in my Genesis Top 5 too, which goes something like this:- 1. Firth of Fifth 2. Watcher of the Skies 3. The Musical Box 4. The Knife 5. Supper's Ready

The question, as posed by the OP, is one i cant really answer as there are too many to choose. But if the question is slightly changed to 'you can pick one PG era track to play for the day but thats all' it would have to be either 'Twilight Alehouse' or 'Can-utility and the Coastliners'

That would be my choice, too. But Firth of Fifth, The Musical Box, Watcher of the Skies, The Cinema Show, The Knife and The Fountain of Salamacis are only a whisker behind.

I nearly chose that one. It's the first song I think of when thinking of Genesis.

I mean that's just incredibly difficult, lol. But let me think...
I'm gonna give it to Get 'Em Out By Friday. It doesn't have a fancy keyboard solo or guitar solo, but the guitar work is excellent and the keys drive a lot of the song, the bassline might be Mike's best, Phil is fantastic as always especially with all the tempo changes and dynamics employed, and it Gabriel's best job of voicing a variety of characters to tell a story.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

To be honest every song that's been mentioned so far has a great case for being their best, and all are big favorites of mine. Part of the great thing about PG era Genesis is its really easy for folks to agree on what the best stuff is, regardless of what they think of the not best stuff. Once you add in the PC era it gets a little harder, and once they go pop a bunch of people jump ship.

AWESOME picks everyone; I always forget The Musical Box. The Knife rules! Good choice on The Cage!

Very difficult to choose just one from such a vast body of sublime contenders but Get 'Em Out By Friday is what both Pete Townshend and Ray Davies could only dream of delivering as 'Rock Opera' back in the day.

Seven Stones and Fountain of Salmacis are my two favorites off Nursery Cryme. The former is hauntingly beautiful, and the latter is where Genesis really steps it up in preparation for the albums to follow IMO!
