Congrats to the San Francisco Giants' Alyssa Nakken, first woman to on-field coach a MLB game.  Along with Katie Sowers, SF continues its tradition of forward movement even in sports.

Thank you for confirming my experience.

My brother and mother both did a mail in vote for Bernie. I didn't because I wasn't sure I saw the point but also because I didn't really look into it. If it wasn't down to just one person like it was by the time it got to my state I would have.

Re voting, my lovely state of Oregon only has mail-in voting, which I think is extremely safe and sane. And of course I will vote, no matter what I would have to do, I would vote.

Having gone through super long lines in Nashville in 2008, even early voting had lines over an hour long, where, for some reason, there were less places to vote than ever in Nashville (please say this in your mind in my sarcastic tone of voice for full effect), with an expected high turnout.  I think the same happened in Memphis that year (Easy Money)?  The two highly Democratic locales in Tennessee.  Um hm.

But I do hear what you're saying about the experience with a group of people, which can also be initimidating in some circumstances, which is why I think voting by mail is a safe and sane way to do it.  Also that nice paper trail, which for some reason never took quite as long as modern computerized tallying does.  Another um hm from me.

hah.. have fun with that.  Two of my closest and dearest long time friends are Trumpateers...  of the drank a river of booze, smoked a field of sh*t and thus completely fried their brain variety.

We have fun talking politics haha though I nearly punched out Jeff when our disagreement went a bit too far and a bit too heated one time. .but that is the good thing about old war buddies..  was all forgotten next time we saw each other. At least until we rinsed and repeated...

I voted in person because I don't want to hear any complaints about 'corrupt' mail in votes.
Now I must head back to Nextdoor where I battle with local trumpateers on a daily basis ... up, up and away!

BeerClap and good point John .I didn't think of that..  about early voting and the increased use of it making traditional voting places less crowded. Then again as I noted.. if 2018 is any clue to 2020.  I suspect with record setting turn out.. it might be crowded regardless of how many vote early or by mail.

and yeah.. same here John. Raff and I have become hermits other than my trips back and forth to work and Raff doing the grocery thing.

^ I voted in person today, local state politics. The polling place had all the necessary precautions and it was less 'germy' than a trip to the store.
I'll vote in person for the presidential election too. Early voting has made polling places much less crowded.
I don't go out for much, groceries and voting, thats about it.

^ or living in 'the bubble' which .. what.. 40% seem to be.

interesting topic of discussion in the office today..  until we found out what Fairfax Co did...the right move... regarding the battle between local and Trump/DeVoss about reopening the schools

so given teh choice.. between voting absentee/mail or voting in person. Which do you all think you will do.

Here is a nice summation of how each state has.. or has not.. changed its policies regarding voting in the Covid world

for myself...  perhaps it is the smart thing to do to vote via the mail or absentee but probably won't do it as long as ol' Sam Tucker is still used as my local voting spot (heard that some states have severely resricting actual voting locations during this spring and summer primary season)

I remember 2018 and voting.. as I noted in my thoughts I posted here when that election happeened.

You felt it.. .a long line...  you felt like you were joined together with your neighbors.. fellow residents and doing your civic duty.  I remember talking with one of the volunteers after I voted.. and asked her.. have you EVER seen turnout like this before.  (noting that I live in a deeply 80-20ish blue area in a now very blue state...with zero competitive races) and she she .. no she hadn't.. never had.

we had a good laugh when I told her.. well.. get ready for 2020..

anyhow..  I think I'd really miss that person to person interaction.. fellow voters.. the volunteers.. the actual process of voting with a damn machine .. and getting that silly sticker.  I think I'd put up with a lot of crap.. lines. whatever that social distancing requires. to cast a physical vote

what about you all..  given it any thought yet..  as I noted yesterday.. we are approaching mere weeks away before we can get ballots and vote via mail

Two things I wanted to add about the response to the pandemic, the first of which I suppose is close to conspiracy theory, but I can't help but wonder.

I find it remarkable that the winding down of the actions of the pandemic response team should coincide with the realisation that Covid disproportionately effect poor and black communities. Are white casualties considered collateral damage? Reeks of Stephen Miller.

So, with that out of the way, just my observation about the US response in general. I, just like many others outside the US, have been watching the development there with growing disbelief. The US would be the foremost country in the world to technically deal with this. The numbers grow and grow with little or no reaction, and I sit and think: Surely, at some point they must notice something. But week after week goes by and .... nothing, especially from the Republican side. So I'm wondering: what could possibly worse than millions of infected and tens of thousands of deaths? Probable answer: a mean tweet from the president, apparently.

How on earth is future history going to explain this?

What would worry me most is the time frame.

Say Biden is elected, he'd take office in January 2021, still half a year away. Can you imagine what things will look like by then? Half a year ago, the virus hadn't even got off the ground, the Black Lives Matter protests were still on the horizon, and look at the state of things now. It's taken just over three months to get to this point, so there's about double that time still to come until Biden (if that happens). That's scary, especially as the pandemic is still on an exponential trajectory, and Trump's private militia is just starting to hit the streets.
