I have been asked to make this topic, so I have, despite the fact I've never heard of them.
Probably means I need to pay a lot of attention to this then.

I drove a rented one last Summer. The steering was too stiff.

I had a sneaking suspicion that this thread might be a wind-up, but I just had a listen to a song by Torman Maxt on YouTube and they're surprisingly good! Smile

Do you have a problem with pain? Torman Maxt - The Problem of Pain: Part 1 http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=16857

The story behind it is more interesting than the music, but by all means, do check it out. It certainly got a lot of listens due to circumstances involving its addition and exposure as a featured artist.

Here is the youtube playlist for that album: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mJ917UBEwU2qLpz3i1OO3gc5RrRkZFEXA

Torman Maxt was PA's first Featured Artist of the Month in 2008, a paid slot, and after a critical review was removed for The Problem of Pain: Part 1, there was a huge backlash. That brought into play censorship issues and site integrity. Religious themes albums can also be more controversial. A glowing review by a PR person for the album didn't help.
It was significant, and for many of us who were around then, it was a very memorable event in PA's history. Painful for some and entertaining for many. Lest we forget.

Here is an interview with the band at PA over three years after that event:http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=72292

I don't find it that bad, I even like aspects of it, mind you I listen to some genuinely really bad music. I started my post in the topic with: "I didn't find the album amazingly bad or amazing anything, unless it's quite amazingly lackluster." Emotions were running high with many and the reputation and harshness was not just about the music but the way people felt that it should have been handled. I did feel bad for Torman Maxt.

Listening to it now I do hear it in a much more positive light.

you are evil Greg haha.. good to see you still have it in you.

yeah it was entertaining as hell.. until it wasn't...

we talked around this last year when we had that spate of PA's future and history threads.. this marked the end of the good times of the site. We lost a lot of good people.. good collabs and reviewers out of M@X's little stunt and laid some bad blood between admins and some collabs that later really turned nasty. LOL

Anyway it is a good bit of PA's legend and lore..  Andy actually had a good synopsis of it.. and of course.. the album

I remember having listened to that album once. It sounded homebrew and rickety-rattling, but I found the tunes rather catchy and not unpleasant. So I'm not as negative about The Problem of Pain Part 1 as many others here.

Thanks Greg, for reposting that thread, what more than 10yrs old now...OMG. So many members gone, but not forgotten, amazing discussions back then as micky always states...'back when the site was rockin!!'

The whole TM thing was so polarizing.....Part 2 was a much better recorded album, that was my main issue with Part 1, it was so terrible from a mix and mastering job it really was a tough listen.

Well, I like Torman Maxt, even if nobody else does, although in all honesty, I'd never heard of them before either. Smile

That's fine, to be honest I've never listened to them but I was aware of the furore that surrounds the very mention of their name here, so basically it was a bit unfair as newer members probably aren't aware of this.

Well I've listened to it but I doubt I ever will again. It's not that bad if you ignore the out of tune guitars and the too loud drums but it's no more than a 3 star effort.

While I do have a cruel and evil side, and definitely am something of a joker and a prankster, when I wrote the following in the Duke thread I had every intention of explaining. I use the winky-face, ;) ,to indicate when I'm kidding around. No malicious intent intended, and I had expected to explain the history in the other thread (thought I would be asked about it there before an actual topic on it was created). It's also an in-joke intended to amuse those who remember, but I had intended it for some illustrative purposes for some ideas on that topic.

For your next "Does anyone like?" topic, if this becomes a series, I might suggest Torman Maxt. ;)

Most every album someone likes, but with enough research you will find albums in PA that no one has professed liking either in the fora or in the ratings/ reviews. Mostly that will be because it is so unknown. There are some albums that even their makers and friends of the creators hate.

These topics remind me somewhat of a topic called The great prog band you're sure noone else's heard

My little scenario/ story there was an album made, recorded, produced by deaf people which I saved from a not so mysterious fire before anyone could hear it, and I had not listened to it yet. Of course someone has or at least had heard of that Prog band (said person may be no more), and of course someone will like Duke, you like it, and you're someone. It does have a 3.50 with 1444 ratings at PA. I somewhat like it.

Torman Maxt was the closest I could think of to a band which people some know here where the question "Does anyone like such-and-such?" might seem a serious inquiry (despite the humour element). Of course having been for a long time and knowing this site, I already knew that Duke had its fans. Research shows that, but I also I have that experience as a long time member. I thought it would be a fun piece of PA history to share with the OP as we get to know each other better. In this case I wasn't being deliberately wicked, but rather mischievous in a way, sure.   My sense of humour is on the mischievous, and absurd, side.

You are definitely very much not alone. I've been around this site for a long time, you might be surprised, and even shocked, to see some of the stuff that some people like.

Duke has a good rating at rateyourmusic (don't know if you are familiar with that site): https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/genesis/duke/

EDIT: Duke is divisive (most everything is to some extent, but some of course are more divisive than others), as are albums in PA such as Can's Tago Mago, Tangerine Dream's Zeit, Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, Soft Machine's Third to quite an extent, Yes' tales from Topographic Oceans, lots in RIO/Avant and Zeuhl, Dream Theater, and out of PA's database, the Shaggs....

I find it so funny that people that don't usually listen to progressive metal enjoy Torman Maxt. LOL

I don't really know them but they seem to be one of those bands who are famous for being infamous(kind of like Deyss and Edith).
