Martin Barre has been mentioned as underrated, but I would also suggest Ian Anderson's catchy but complex acoustic guitar arrangements that wind through almost all Tull albums. Honestly, I'd rather hear Anderson on acoustic than flute nearly every time.

Anderson's acoustic work at the start of Thick As A Brick and such of it throughout sells the song. It becomes a die-hard's only soft of thing without it (albeit a very good one). Beautiful stuff.
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

^ Anderson is great on bass as well (Stormwatch - esp. Dark Ages). Surprising he didn’t have a gold flute coz most everything he touched (at least in the 70’s) was gold.

Hi,

Thanks,

Was about to post those two ... the late Michael Karoli, amazing in anything that he could just fly off on, and not stop (Mother Sky is great example) ... and John Weinzierl, who really did some outstanding guitar work, specially in YETI (the title cut) where he just about sustains the "improvisation/meditation" all by himself! And even later there are some insanely beautiful things in "Lemmings", "Wolf City" and "Vive La Trance".

Hi,

Wow ... over Terje Rypdal? Even if Terje is linked to jazz a lot more than rock music, but he does have some rock stuff ... and one of the best "chamber music" things with an electric guitar along with David Darling!

that no-one went "wow" about the guitar in this track just shows how underappreciated Roman Bunka is

Perhaps John Cippolina of Quicksilver Messenger Service and his pal Gary Duncan.
John had his tremolo arm working overtime during his solos and Gary was a strong rhthym player who also had some great leads.....I don’t think they’re that famous.

John Cippolina also had a short-lived band named Raven with just one album

Sorry Tom, I disagree, Anderson's bass on Stormwatch was not a patch on John Glascock's; extremely naive playing by Anderson IMHO. Amazing how Anderson as producer brought the bass so much out of to the front of the mix on the tracks he played on, and pushed Glascock's impeccable playing on Orion, Flying Dutchman and Elegy to the back of the mix. Barriemore Barlow actually commented on this in a later interview.

Sure he´s underrated and could be in the group of Clapton, Beck, McLaughlin if lived in UK or US, really big fave of mine too!

Hi,

All of the guitar work in both Family, Streetwalkers is exceptional and it's in the hands of one person!

This duo is insane and sometimes off their rocker, but for hearing something totally out of it, and still one of the most beautiful things, you got to listen to the great version of C'MON with the Gwalia Male Voice Choir, is sensational and I'm not sure that some of it is even rehearsed, as it sounds better than if it was worked up. Micky is simply incredible in it, and Deke is the one that has to bring it all together just about.

BTW, a sad read is Deke's book "Man on the Road to Nowhere" (reviewed here on PA) , but it is without a doubt one of the most incredible stories ... they enjoyed playing together and added up to each other really well, and it shows in all the albums going back to their very first one.

A duo for the ages and an excellent duo! Probably one of the best!

Favorable line (in another live show) ... he don't know the chords and neither do we!

I'm not sure that folks like Jukka can, or will EVER get the appreciation that the over-rated Clapton, and the better known Mclaughlin ... but his work by himself and his band, is very good, and probably could use a few more listens ... and please ... pay attention to WHEN it was done ...

Clem Clempson, formerly of hard-rock band Humble Pie, did an outstanding job on Jon Anderson's solo LP "Song of Seven."   He was a member of Jon's "New Life Band."

There are some real gems hidden in prog!

I thought he did an admirable job - considering it’s not his primary instrument. And indeed, Glascock was a fantastic bassist, even in Carmen. I maybe exaggerated a bit, but Anderson is still a bit of a genius.
