Phil Upchurch. He played with many artists and bands as a session guitarist. I think I know him from the Rotary Connection. I have two fine solo albums by him (Upchurch and Darkness Darkness) in a very nice soul jazz style. Here is a James Brown cover by him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbSlkluhWms

I don't have many favourite guitarists, because I usually just enjoy guitar in general and also I'm not into typical virtuoso style playing.  I wouldn't know any favourite prog rock guitarists. My favourites overall are Jimi Hendrix and Grant Green, but they are not under-appreciated.

Excellent selection!  When I first started to play lead guitar, I used to jam along with Bill on Stanley Clarke's first solo LP, it was great fun!

Check out this amazing RTF tune!!  Bill BURNS on this one!

a sure sign people just don't care about guitar heroes like they used to
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

How is he overlooked? He's in one of the most famous, mainstream bands at the moment.

Chris Fry (Magenta). A very versatile and adaptable player. He combines many different sounds and styles throughout the band’s music.

Where I'm from Muse is often overlooked. Not that people don't know a song or two of theirs, but they don't recognize the name until you mention Madness or Uprising, and even then it's like a vague recollection like "oh yeah, I remember that song, it's pretty good."

I guess around a prog forum Muse are pretty well known, but in my world they're really not that well known.

But if we're talking about under-appreciated guitarists, I don't think Matt really gets his due credit most of the time, even online. Even where Muse are well recognized, I see most of the praise go to Chris Wolstenholme's bass or Matt's songwriting, but not very much to his guitar skills.
