I appreciate your careful choice of words but doesn't 'collusion with a (hostile) foreign power' equate to treason?

And lots of people thought Clinton was up to his neck in Whitewater, so what?

no.. not necessarily.

There is a fine line between collusion and treason.  There is so much smoke as regards collusion it will be more surprising if Mueller or the Justice Department does not find there was collusion between Trump and Russia/Putin/Oligarchs.    It is very likely that it will be found that much of the 60+ million that Trump lent of 'his own money' to his campaign came from Russian backers. Thus getting into a whole different realm of campaign finance violations but with a twist as they came from a foreign  sources which obviously is highly regulated if not illegal for it sets up a candidate to be blackmailed. Like Manafort.. when those that control your strings tell you to dance.. you dance man.

there in comes the difference between collusion with a foreign power and treason... something Flynn looks to be lucky to be escaping along with perhaps Manafort.  When you act as an agent of a foreign power while in employ of this country.. acting not to the benefit of the US.. but another power. Is that treason?  A 24k question and one that Flynn's judge sure chimed in on.. and not out of the realm of possiblity that others may see.

That is what I suppose the whole probe will boiil down to..   has Trump subrorned our interests for the Russians.  I suspect if he did .. Mueller and the Justice Department will find out he did.. but the burdon of proof to prosecute it..  absolutely frickin sky high for that is a charge you can't make unless it is found to be a slam dunk case.

Yet his Macedonian comments from last year make the possibility...  I mean man really... completely unthinkable in a normal reality that our President was a pawn of a foreign nation..  completely plausible.  I don't think Trump. or 80% of most Americans can find Macedonia on a map.. much less know its history in the region. But who does.. and has a strong centuries long sphere of interest in that region.. umm  hmmm

and I'm feeling nice this morning .. so I'll let slide your stupid Whitewater remark.  Again.. I'll give you credit for having half a brain to perhaps open your mind and see the vast differences beteween the two. The only people that thought Whitewater was anything at all.. were Republican Politicians who threw it against the wall hoping to find something that could stick and destroy Clinton.

as we move into 2019.. a couple of food for thought articles. Should be a interesting year.

was surprised to read this piece on the right of center The Hill site... but one can see it coming. I sure as hell did though I did lose my office pool thinking this would happen last year, but one figures at some point the rats will leave the sinking ship and much as we have discussed before.. the reason the GOP survived Nixon was they didn't stand behind him. Does the GOP finally turn on Trump and open their eyes to what is generally known.. Trump is dead meat in 2020 and is dragging the party into national irrelevance by alienating key demographic groups. 2018 showed one thing very clearly.. white rural votes are not enough to win. Even wringing a high percentage of them to turn out as they did in 2018, as they are declining as a total percentage is not enough when you are alienating damn near everyone else. At some point they have to turn their backs on Trump and right wing/white identity politics..  and if they don't now..  it may be too late by the time 2024 (or 2028 by my estimation) comes about.

another great year end article.. but a damning one as it comes from historians.. not those with political axes to grind.

The Goopers will not turn on Twitler...  The evilgelicals and the christofascists have made it abundantly clear that he can do no wrong by them.  I am getting a bit tired of the Nixon comparisons because this is a different time.  Of course there are parallels.  The one missing is any integrity amongst the Trumpholes... Angry

hahaha... nice....but I wouldn't recommend trying that these days. LOL Like any good bananna republic we also have tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets and jack booted thugs that aren't afraid to use them on women and children.. much less politicians!!!

re: the wall.  Like what I am hearing...  the shutdown itself is about to reach critical mass and I do see and hear rumblings of a compromise. One could imagine Chuck and Nancy playing hardball and not giving a single dollar for the wall... and perhaps they will not and wait till either Trump folds.. or he doesn't and the shutdown continues on for the next several years. That I don't see happening. This isn't their mess but ..

that is the kind of senseless political hardball that Republicans might play, and part of what has poisoned and paralyzed Capital Hill so completely. However both Chuck and Nancy are responsible politicians who are bipartisan in the way they lead.. I doubt they will play that card.. but will offer money for the wall.. but like any good compromise.. it should leave both sides unhappy.

Trump and Republicans are going to have ALSO compromise.  I can see the 2013 immigration reform bill killed by conservatives in the House, coming back up and into play with firm commitment of being introduced by McConnell and getting a Senate vote and obviously getting a signature by Trump. I can see a compromise happening but for funds for the wall... the Republicans are going to have eat something just as unpleasant to them as any money for that stupid pointless waste of taxpayers money wall will be for Democrats. That is the way things should work, especially in a divided government.  Curous to see what this end game is going to be but do expect it to be over soon for shortly paychecks will be due for federal workers.. and ummm..  the IRS who have our annual tax season to prepare for. .and with a messy new system they have to work thorough. Already heard the tax filing deadlines are likely to be pushed back because of the shutdown.. it really can't last too much longer.. even with Trump at the head of things.

I think this is the most astute comment over the last few pages concerning Syria. There are two words that can sum up what this is about: natural gas. Think about this a bit and consider the players involved.

you are talking of 'Trump voter'  I am talking about Republican Senators who are no fans of Trump and perhaps the last men standing in many cases of the old Republican Party. Sure they have been whistling past the graveyard taking what he has given them and hoping his excesses and mistakes keep to a minimum.

the author raises a good point. .there is likely a breaking point with support in the Senate..  in which yes one could see them voting to remove him.  The interesting part is the House itself and whether or not they would impeach Trump..  I really don't see that happening in most any case.  By the time Mueller drops his bomb on Trump .. we will likely be within a year of the next election cycle.  I think for various reasons.. not the least of which Trump is dead man walking in 2020 and likely to be a major down ballot drag that will flip the Senate and strenthen their majority in the House.. why remove him.

as far as Nixon.. not as much comparison as lesson from him.  The GOP came back strong and established a decade and a half of national dominance a mere term after Nixon because the GOP at that time were Americans first, and Republicans 2nd and when faced with what Nixon did.. they made clear he was out.  The Republican leaders (in the Senate) face the same choice...  cut ties and try to save the party from the stain of a President who violated the law.. or will party loyalty (and fear of 'Trump voter') keep them supporting him till the end.  Hard to see that they do. .but unless the House impeaches him.. they are sort of tied up in bed with him. The deal with the devil they made.. and that prices will be.. as it always is..a steep cost they and the party will pay.  I do think we are about to see what we saw in 1980.. but on the flip side..a decade and more of Democratic dominance at the National level and a progressive revolution much akin the Reagan revolution which only recently finally petered out.. it influenced our poltics for many decades.. I can see the same coming of the 2020 election.

we shall see.. fascinating times ahead.

You got me here)))... I had difficulties recalling the story even after finding it on the net. It was so inconsequential even the liberal media stopped mentioning it.

Micky don't try looking smarter than you are (and I speak uncharacteristically friendly here). It's the same thing as when I caught you musing about South Dakota v. Wayfair. These stories are written by trolls, it's part of the 'hate Trump' campaign, you think they are true but they're fallacies at best. Without going into details, Trump using the unofficial name for Macedonia wasn't dancing to Putin's tune as you imply. It was quite the opposite since Putin woos Greece and doesn't care about Macedonia.

Actually I mentioned Starr's Whitewater as a comparison with that of Mueller since lots of rumors and allegations, from embezzlement to murder, were flying then, yet it ended in nothing, so maybe it's better to wait and see rather than speculate here. But never mind that. You provided a better line.... given that Clinton was a compulsive liar and scumbag you keep repeating this old bullsh*t about 'find something' to destroy him LOL.... he-he...

I don't get this at all (gawping incredulously).

If national security is the point of all this, how does a prolonged government shutdown help US security in any way at all?

At this point it seems that the USA is ground zero of a pandemic of stupidity sweeping the western world.

^ The US can run itself without government for a very long time, that's the best feature of independence.  National security?   What, you think the National Guard or FBI won't spring into action if something happens?  As usual you have little grasp of American governance.

You're probably right, I haven't, that's why I'm asking. Because from an outside perspective it just looks so very, very weird.

But if you feel you've got it all under control, that's great. Good to hear it.

^Well..it is weird...I mean look who's in the White House...'nuff said..?   ;)
But...currently not all govt depts are shut down and the security, police,  etc is still up and running.
But if this goes on much longer including Mueller's work.. impeachment might be the least of his worries.
;)

btw....imho Drumpf could care less about a wall..that's  to placate  the 'people'  who voted him in and to distract from the Mueller investigation and to try to slow it down.

The only reason that Trump cares about the wall is so that he can put his name on it when the name changes to The United States of Trumplandia.  Of course, I jest, but sometimes I wonder.  Walls are usually built with the intention of keeping people in, though they start building them by promising something entirely different.  Most everyone that thinks knows that a wall is an ineffective waste of money which the US doesn't have right now and, unless US citizens start to realize the inevitable fact that their taxes are going to have to be raised, they will never have it.
Those are just a few stupid things that are ticking through my brain right now.  I come to this site to get away from politics, and I end up here anyway.  But the name Trump just raises my blood pressure, even before he ran for President.

The worst thing is that the 'wall' can be climbed, breached, or tunneled under by determined people.   The design is flawed, and I'm surprised that's not being brought up constantly.   Hello?

Just a stupendous waste of money when there are so many other important things that need attending to in our country.  And that work.

I agree with whomever said it is just something that his supporters are behind.

And TCat, yes!  Never could stomach the man...reminds me of Gorey's The Beastly Baby.

I hear about that a lot actually and it is brought up quite often, but then his supporters don't listen to or read the news.  Instead they get it from high paid people with an opinion, the same place where Trump gets his advice.

I actually had tears in my eyes laughing when I read about Rashida Tlaib’s m*therf*cker comment that’s making the news rounds.

So, is it the democrats' strategy to now limbo under the low bar set by Trump?

Is the next election going to be won by the party with the biggest potty mouth?

We now have the mainstream news reporting on that sort of expression when a normal American is close to a seizure when confronted by something as revolting as a nipple in a movie for a second or two.

What news are the American kids allowed to watch these days? Or do they actually watch the real news on dark street corners at night?

I hope Trump gets re-elected; it’d be a shame if this insanity were to end one day, it’s just so very entertaining.

It might be entertaining, it might be funny, but let's leave entertainment and funny up to Saturday Night Live and other comedians like we should have left this orange entertainer in his make believe world.  It won't be funny to America or the entire world when Trump accidentally utilizes the nuclear football because someone pissed him off, or when he decides to extend his presidency and postpone elections indefinitely.
