FROM EMILIA...
La Malta Bastavda (name of the band modified because of automatic-censorship!) were formed in 2002 in San Giovanni in Persiceto, a small town in the province of Bologna. The name of the band refers to a kind of mortar, a workable paste used to bind building blocks and concrete masonry units together, fill and seal the irregular gaps between them, and sometimes add decorative colours or patterns in masonry walls. In same way the name describes their music, a particular mix of jazz, prog, classical, avant-garde and surreal poetry. After many years of hard work, some line up changes, a good live activity on the local scene and three self-produced demos entitled La Malta b*****da (2002), Palude (2005) and Beata ignoranza (2012), in 2016 the band released their eponymous first official album on the independent label A Simple Lunch with a line up featuring Luca Ferrigno (vocals), Benedetto Ferrigno (synth, backing vocals), Elisa Sala (marimba, trombone, percussion), Carlo S. Tedeschi (clarinet, sax), Marcello Melotti (keyboards), Davide Cotti (guitars), Daniele Cosmi (bass), Lorenzo Scagliarini (drums) plus the guest Karl Segnoe (bandoneon, narrative vocals) on two tracks. It’s an interesting work that every now and again could recall other bands from Emilia such as Akt or Deus Ex Machina… You can listen to the complete album here: More info: Edited by andrea - June 08 2018 at 04:12 |

FROM LIGURIA...
Una Stagione all'Inferno, from Genoa... From www.blackwidow.it: “Una Stagione all'Inferno” is an Italian rock band formed in 1997 by the collaboration between Fabio Nicolazzo, coming from Genoa's gothic rock scene, and Laura Menighetti, of classical training. Later Diego Banchero (Il Segno del Comando), Carlo Opisso and Francesco Scariti joined the band, that released the song “La ballata di Carini” which was included in the compilation "E tu vivrai nel terrore..." published in 1998 by the Genoese label Black Widow Records. The track is the theme song of the famous 70s script "L'amaro caso della Baronessa di Carini" interpreted by the band in a dark progressive way. Subsequently the band was preparing to make a concept album about that script, but this didn't happen because of disagreements within the band. In 2011 Fabio Nicolazzo and Laura Menighetti decided to take up the band, and this led to the ambitious idea of creating a concept on "Il Mostro di Firenze" (The Monster of Florence), and the record will eventually come out in the spring of 2018 after a long process due to the topic's complexity. In the following years a partnership was created with the drummer and sound engineer Marco Biggi (ex Rondň Veneziano, ex Radio Gaga), Roberto Tiranti (Labyrinth, Wonderworld, etc.) Pier Gonella (Ex Labyrinth, Mastercastle, Necrodeath) and Paolo Firpo (classical saxophonist ), and, thanks also to the collaboration with a string trio composed by Kim Schiffo (cello), Laura Sillitti (violin) and Daniele Guerci (viola), the album comes to life with gloomy and misty hues, a journey through the wastelands of madness and the occult. FROM SICILIA...
ArcaMiri, from Siracusa, took shape in 2017 when four talented musicians met to play original compositions with the aim to experiment and find a personal sound. The line up features Vincenzo Arisco (drums), Peppe Capodieci (bass), Simona Minniti (vocals) and Ivan Ricciardi (piano, synthesizers). In 2018 they self-released an interesting EP containing four tracks recorded between December 2017 and May 2018 where they blend classical music, jazz and progressive rock with various exotic musical spices. Ethereal atmospheres, changes in rhythm and mood, poetical lyrics, soaring operatic vocals… If you like bands such as Opus Avantra I think you should listen to them! You can listen to their first EP entitled Contatto here: More info: Edited by andrea - October 20 2018 at 07:13 |

FROM LOMBARDIA...
Hailing from Milan, Frontecielo is the brainchild of two talented multi-instrumentalists, Donatella Basilico (keyboards, drums, percussion, lead vocals) and Piero Caniparo (electric and acoustic guitars, bass, guitar synth, backing vocals). Their project is an effort to blend different influences such as progressive rock, fusion, metal, pop, classical music and opera to express their feelings. After a long, painstaking work, in 2017 they self-released a debut album entitled Nights, a concept album sui generis where all the tracks follow a common thread, inspired by nocturnal experiences. In fact, according to their website, the album's title comes from the consideration that in some way each piece has some connection with the night. The art cover painted by Donatella Basilico tries to capture the mood of this work... Here you can listen to their debute album entitled Nights and legally download it for free... This is a fantastic thread. I have just begun to dip my toes in Italian Prog and I can already see my head will be reeling.

FROM VENETO...
Hailing from the province of Treviso, Il Labirinto di Alice took shape in 2017 between the towns of Asolo and Montebelluna with a line up featuring Christian "Gino" Agostinetto (vocals), Daniele Forner (guitar), Daniele "Lele" Petrin (guitar), Matteo "Ford" Favero (keyboards, synth), Andrea "Simba" Basso (bass) and Enrico "Maestro" Pasetti (drums). Soon after the birth of the band they started performing live on the local scene honing their skills and had the chance to share the stage with other emerging prog bands such as Basta! or Endless Season. In 2018 the band self-released an interesting debut album entitled (Ri)Passi featuring four long, elaborate pieces where they showcase good musicianship and creativity blending vintage sounds and fresh ideas. Although every now and again their music could recall Le Orme or other historic bands from the seventies, the operatic, theatrical vocals and some heavier moments remind me of newer bands such as Absenthia, Le Porte Non Aperte or Panda Fight Club...
