I voted  Blackmore. He comes off as the more skilled player.

That may be, but I wonder how good Ritchie would be without the middle and ring fingertips of his fretting hand LOL

Iommi. Sabbath meant more to me than Purple.
...a vigorous circular motion hitherto unknown to the people of this area, but destined
to take the place of the mud shark in your mythology...

Blackmore is great, but Iommi is GOD!
The Mothers of Invention make reverence to every single Iommi's riff.....he combined his fu***ng unique style with his compositional skills to create a whole new music form........

I suspect Blackmore is the better guitarst technically, but most days of the week I'd probably rather listen to Sabbath than Rainbow or DP, and I'm a fan of all three.

Being objective though, I'll vote Blackmore.

I'm a big fan of both bands Purple and Sabbath, but Blackmore easily beats Iommi in my book.

suspect I'd have more fun out on the town drinking with Tony... but as guitarist.. I'd damn sure want to learn from Ritchie.  Love both but stylistically and range... Ritchie smokes Tony.

If I were playing by objective rules and vote for those I consider the most naturally gifted for anything related to music, I'd have to put a guy like Franz Liszt way above most music that really moves me... But I never listen to Liszt and hardly enjoy 1/200 of what he composed. So what's your point there !?...

Iommi might not win, or even he'll lose, in which case I'll consider ***YOU*** as the traitor  who allowed this to happen (provided you really prefer Sabbath and Ritchie scores even / +1 in the end).

^Well said man! To hell with proficiency or musical instrument wizards/acrobats just for the show........ MANY rock guitarists are pretty gifted ones for that matter, however just a FEW of them appeal to me as great band or solo composers.....or even just innovative ones. And Tony Iommi falls right on my book of both talents, really one of a kind....
Oh ... I must admit that too much improvisation bores the hell out of me.
Anyway I betchya! ..gonna check out that guy you mentioned, I'm afraid he's a helluva composer too .....hahahah

I guess I interpreted the question differently, and yes there may be a difference between a 'favourite' musician and a 'most technically gifted' musician, but the question was not 'favourite band'

I think Blackmore is a better soloist, and a more varied and versatile musician, but I would rather listen to Sabbath songs.

Yeah 'favourite musician', 'favourite band' .... who doesn't give a damn about it in polls like this right?
Basically there are two kinds of people here:

1) those who care about the 'most technically gifted' heavy rock guitarist; 2) and those who really don't care much about his skills relevance for playing good heavy rock music ... simple like that.
I'm on the second team ..of course.
Now give me another music, and the approach can obviously change man.....

Aside from being original and talented, Iommi played his entire career with home made prosthetics, having lost the finger tips of his right (fret board) hand when he was about 16. He gets it my book.

Depends whether I want to hear riffs or solos.  For riffs, Iommi's the man.  For leads, Blackmore was way ahead of his time, especially with Rainbow.  That being said, I'd much rather hear Roth or Schenker's leads than Blackmore.

How about this way to make sure: one is a producer and there's a band for which either Ritchie or Tony will be chosen first, then the other members. The chosen one should get the vote...
