Are you a fan of this band?
What's your general opinion about their music? Do you have a favorite album by them?

I really like them. Mark Knopfler is an exceptional guitar player. The first album is probably my favourite but Brothers in Arms is quite excellent too.

Good band, though they usually don't make me resonate. Nevertheless, Love over Gold is a masterpiece, one of my favourite non-prog (?) albums, and Brothers in Arms is another good one.

Love DS... or most of it... not a fan of the poppy stuff like Twisting By The Pool, Solid Pop or Walk Of Life, but I'm a real fan of their more introspective stuff like Private Investigations, the flipside of BIA, etc... At their best, they were proggy
In terms of albums, it's Love Over Gold by a mile, than the debut (Gallery, Sultans, Knife, Waterline) and the flipside of Brothers In Arms. Not big on Making Movies, though, but their weakest in their swan song (OES) |

One of the mainstream greats. Saw them twice in concert ; Brothers In Arms and On Every Street.
Again, kinda moved on from them but my sister has all their vinyls and I listen every so often - Love Over Gold is my pick. |

Definitely like them a lot...especially Making Movies and about half of the debut album. When they broke it was cool that Knopfler had such a unique clean sound. "The Man's Too Strong" off Brothers in Arms is a fantastic song...

Pick (Pique) Withers, originally from the Mellotron-fest band Spring, was the first drummer.
Also having Terry Williams from Man, afterwards. Hmmm, some Prog connections right there. |

Almost like my words! Except that I prefer Communique over the debut. In fact DS was my first favourite band when I was about 13 years old (1983-4), and 'Telegraph Road' was one of the two songs that introduced me an epic song structure (the other one was 'Animation' by Jon Anderson) to a great effect. But I have always hated some of their songs, those that Sean Trane mentioned. Especially the album Love Over Gold is still dear to me.

I was about 14 when Love Over Gold came out and I thought it was the best album ever made, was obsessed with it. These days if I listen to it the debt to Dylan and Springsteen seems all too painfully obvious and I don't really enjoy it. Brothers In Arms was a huge disappointment at the time - and now strikes me as a passable AOR album, but that's all.
I still think the first album, when Mark Knopfler wasn't trying to be an American and his wonderful guitar playing was allowed to shine in much simpler settings, stands up pretty damn well. Edited by Mascodagama - October 06 2017 at 00:42 |

I can "see" Dylan (a bit), but Springsteen?? ... You probably meant JJ Cale As for BIA, the flipside is still largely amazing and have LOG-equivalent quality, IMHO |

Sometimes excellent, sometimes 'dire' indeed.
Overall I can take or leave them, although Love over Gold was a very good album. |

The Springsteen influence I see is in the lyrics. A British guy trying to tell American stories and it rings a little false / derivative.
