Oh wow, so this band has it's own thread and everything. Guess I should probably try to get into them then, just gotta figure out which album to start with.

I would start with Power and The Passion and then check out their albums chronologically from that point. The period Dawn to Silent Cries is probably their most popular although I am very fond of Time To Turn and Planets which are very 'synth heavy'.

Oh, looks like this 'Power and The Passion' is probably the best bet.

FLOATING. Gotta be Floating, then Ocean. Then the rest.
All are great, but Codename: Wildgeese is weak.

There's not really a 'best' Eloy album, because they've played different genres.

When you really like hammond driven early 70's progressive spacerock then Floating is your best choice.

But when you like Floydisch guitar/synth driven spacerock with lots of ambient passages than Dawn, Ocean and Silent Cries are your best picks.

When you like more synth driven hardrock (like Saga) then Colours, Planets/Time to Turn and Metromania are worth checking out.

Ra and Destination are only for the fans.

Ocean II and The Tides Return to Forever are great but not a good way to start.
Visionary is more or less repeating what they do best.

I can't wait for the new albums though. Part 1 already sounds really promising.

Nothing against Michael Gerlach, but I'm so happy Hannes Folberth is back with the band.
The current line-up is really something!

Ive just bought the 'Reincarnation- live on stage' triple vinyl version and its a fantastic live lp, a really super document of a group of concerts I really wish i'd seen. It would be so brilliant if they would come and play again live in the UK but I doubt it will happen.

I miss Jurgen behind the drumkit.
Every time a new Eloy album appears, I realise just how much I love this wonderful band.
The one-off Ego On The Rocks LP is a great thing to have too. Detlev and Jurgen - dream team !!

I was very lucky in that I had a very switched on friend who introduced me to Eloy in the very early 80's and a (relatively) local record shop which had a lot of the Eloy lps on import from Germany so I was able to pick up most of their lps (and 'Ego on the rocks included) and I still have those lps today!

^ I actually discovered Eloy by chance in the late-80's. Like you do, looking through the racks at the 2nd-hand vinyl shop, any cover that looks cool, you investigate. I saw Ocean, noticed Jurgen Rosenthal's name (I was obsessed with Scorps' Fly To The Rainbow album, on which he drummed). Bought it, fell in love with it. And bought most others as I came across them. Pic-discs for some of the early 80's albums too. I had to EBay for the Ego vinyl.

The new album is going to be awesome.

I also like Codename: Wildgeese and Ego On The Rocks (but haven't listened to the latter for a long while).
