Just watched English Gardner run.  To my disappointment she is neither.

The Sourbutts surname evolved from any of several places so named in Northern England.  The place name comes from the Old Norse 'saurr,' meaning 'ground,' and the Old English 'byr,' meaning farm.

Maybe. It would be unusual to mix Old Norse and Old English in a place name, whereas the Old Norse for "short" is 'butr' so 'saurrbutr' could mean short-ground rather than ground-farm

This stacks up with other meanings of 'butt' relating to short pieces of abutting land such as in the medieval strip-farming field system and areas of land designated for compulsory archery practice (a butt is a medieval term for an archery target - from where we get the idiom 'butt of a joke').

Alternatively, 'butt' also means barrel so it could also refer to sour beer or wine.
What?

Blimey it's been a long time.

Just had a phone call from "BT Technical Department".

"Hello sir, I'm Kevin from BT Technical Department, we've noticed you appear to have a virus on your computer".

"I'm not a BT customer"

"We know, we monitor other service providers as well".

"Really, which one am I with then?"

"Do you have a computer sir?"

"What do you mean "do I have a computer?", you just told me you'd detected a virus on my computer!. I work in IT Support, do you really want to continue this conversation?"

"F*** off"

Get a proper job Kevin. You knobhead.

PS - I suspect Kevin may not have been his real name.

Quite a few good prog releases at the moment, I can recommend -
Valdez - This (our old friend Mr Godfrey releases a cracker)
Damanek - On Track
The Tangent - The Slow Rust of Forgotten Machinery

plus new releases from Lifesigns and I Am The Manic Whale still to come!

All the best sheds have cobwebs (my son won't even go in mine because he's scared of spiders). They just need a bit of a sweep now and then, which is why I posted.

I was terribly scared of spiders when I was a boy.   Later I learned how crucial they are to controlling flying bugs... and that real cobwebs are mostly dust.

Hi David,

How are things with you?

It's been such a long time since I've visited PAs.

Life has been so hectic over the last 4 years that I haven't had time to blink.
I was made redundant from my job of over 30 years and the job that I'm now in is so exhausting it takes me nearly the whole weekend to recover and then it's back onto the treadmill...

I see, a good thing?  I hope so.  You and your true expertise are sorely missed 'round these parts.  We've lost some good people due to the reCaptcha nonsense of late.

Thanks David.
Yes and no. The job and the commute are exhausting. Most people my age
who worked in 'The City' have moved elsewhere to work. It's a young person's game....

reCaptcha; Access permissions etc.? The 'How many buildings can you see in this picture' thing...

What a pain in the posterior. I was reading a thread about it (Captcha)

I don't like having to use it either.I can understand people getting annoyed about it.I hope that I don't sound patronising.

No I understand too, apparently M@x had potentially serious online threats.  Just how it is right now.

Lee!!! welcome back mate.
I'm still in the City, despite many attempts by my employer to get rid of me.

Hi Alan.

It's great to hear from you. How are things? I hope that you are keeping well

I didn't realise that I had been away for so long. I await news of the next Prog' Curry/Booze up....If they still happen.

We've not had a prog curry for a while now, the last one was just me and Chris (syzygy), I keep thinking it's about time we had another one but never quite get round to it. As you probably know Sigod is in the US now but Jim and Andy are still around here. I'll see what I can sort out.
