A few tunes with titles that fit my mood at the moment. And a big raid of the archives this week. Thanks to my nephew Kris, for giving me the Goo Goo Dolls album for my birthday, I guess to educate me. Thanks to my cousin Nat for reminding me I had the Al Green /Chicago collaboration tucked away at the end of a remaster CD: an excellent piece of soul and Chicago duly muted. Three tracks featuring Jakko Jakszyk, one of which we got a world exclusive some time ago, as it turned out 6 months before the album was eventually released. Another Loughborough connection with the Nucleus track recorded here just over 40 years ago. Properly scheduled in this week, examples from Gary Lucas and Toni Dezso's forthcoming release - and making me think hard: should I dare categorise their music? Alas yet another death of a musician reported this week, hence a couple of tunes from the classic, Can's 'Tago Mago'. Thanks to the Russian modern psychedelia/space rockers Vespero for the promo. And I thought is was about time I played The Beatles' most unusual recording, influenced by Stockhausen: 'Revolution 9'. Thanks to those who fed back giving their preference as to which Bent Knee jingle, might test out the new jingles Magnus 'Mange' Andersson, formerly of Brickhouse and now lead singer with The Electric Grand, made for me too.

After thinking about it for quite some time, we are largely concentrating on Swedish music this Thursday. The exceptions are the Allman Brothers (following the announcement of drummer Butch Trucks' death), our discover of 2017 Firefly Burning, a couple new releases from Cuddle Magic and Parlor Walls, and tracks from the forthcoming sampler 'She Rocks'. Chance to compare drummer/keyboard combos of The Johansson brothers  and Mats Morgan. Of course some Jonas Hellborg in different moods. A personal favourite, Harriet Ohlsson. The wackiness of Samla Mammas Manna. Rock blues/R'n'B of friend and former lead of Brickhouse, Mange Andersson's The Grand Electric. And hopeful if the CD arrives on time, we will include the freshing rock sound of Suicide By Tigers.

John Wetton was a major musician with respect to numbers of albums in my music collection (e.g. cf. David Bowie),  so most the music being played Thursday night with have direct or indirect connections to John Wetton: respectively, the former featuring Wetton, the latter covers of tunes that he recorded first.  Lesser known musicians, who alas have also died in the last few weeks, are featured, i.e.  Doug Lunn and Deke Leonard. In addition, a couple of carry overs from last week's excellent show with Gren Bartley, (I was surprised to discover on playback, that only one Bartley tune was played last week, when we put the show together live on air), so one tune to make up for that and a tune taken from Gren's favourite Tool album. Interesting album of covers by Ed Palermo's BB, due to be released at the end of this month, as featured. A couple of days left to download the recording of the ALT2 Show with Gren Bartley.

Apologies about putting this playlist up on the day of broadcast, but I've been fully occupied repainting my lounge  - I did once have a volunteer to do the curtains but she escaped 2 years ago.

The grim reaper has struck again, it seems weekly now that I play something from a now regrettably dead musicians. This time the great and innovative jazz guitarist, Larry Coryell, said by some as the godfather of jazz fusion, so three of his pieces this week. As I mentioned earlier in the seasoning, following the death of Coryell's colleague, Alphonse Mouzon, I had the privilege of meeting both at London's Jazz Cafe over a decade ago. More from Ed Palermo's slightly hit and miss 'Great Un-American Songbook'. Something from the (American as opposed to the Dutch) Knitts' forthcoming album. The newie from the Residents, an album of songs about rail accidents.... I'm afraid the morbidity continues. As a devoted early Chicago fan, I had to include somethings from the Steven Wilson remixed Chicago album. And more memories of the late Deke Leonard with Man.

It has been quite some years after the last Violin Special but to the third of such, (and there may be an odd viola in here too). (which reminds me to update the catalogue of violinists I posted here some years ago.

Therefore be surprised at the range of playing styles and music here. Inevitably I have to kick off with the former opening music for the show. I'm not tempted to give too many details here, because of the variety, I intend playing, so only a couple more comments. Alas I could not find my Papa John Cretch recordings, to boost a lack of blues here (but last week's show had an above average amount of rock blues). Having considered it for a long time, simply because it will be the longest track I've played in several decades, we finish with the Morgaua Quartet's excellent interpretation of Yes's 'Close To The Edge'. Next week in contrast, I can reveal an airing of a forthcoming excellent (IMHO) RnB album (out in March) by Heath Green & The Makeshifters.

Trying to keep the themed shows going, and so this coming week's heavy ALT2 Show, follows the Gren Bartley, John Wetton and the violin specials. Suggestions for future themes are welcomed.

A couple of excellent new releases feature, i.e. from the essential Allan Holdsworth compilation, 'Eidonon' and some excellent RnB from Heath Green & The Makeshifts (one comparison made to the Frankie Miller Band by a reviewer, maybe but better). No folk - can somebody suggest heavy folk please? However, a good smattering of various forms of heavy jazz fusion spread through the show. A couple of favourites reappear (after a couple of years rest): Frumpy and a track that shows all/most of the tricks when playing rock Hammond; Ygnwie Malmsteen (with the excellent Johansson bros) tackling a classic UK tune; Paul Gilbert plays Brubeck or is that Mozart; Mr Eklundh and Freak Kitchen going Indo-rock ("No, We're Not Danes"), and finally "Kashmir" with an Egyptian orchestra augmenting Plant & Page. Don't forget to turn it up loud next Thursday night.

I had a short correspondence with former Touch bass player and singer Bruce Hauser via Facebook last week. Subsequently I felt I had to play something from that early classic American progressive album; that's where we finish. From that, the theme of this show developed, a reminder that progressive music wasn't purely a British development and there was an explosion of inventive music appearing in the latter half of the 60's, in the USA. Therefore the music below dates from 1965 to 1971, by all American bands (with a few other nationalities included in line ups)  but I have gone for a couple of alternative takes and/or remastered versions.

No major theme this week, however you will discover a greater number of longer tunes than normal, in particular during the jazz start. Another theme features the music of the semi-pro prog band Advent, with the release of their long awaited album 'Silent Sentinel'. Other new releases here included Allan Holdsworth's 'Eidonon', the eponymous Heath Green & The Makeshifters, and the country rock of The Whiskey Gentry. The show ends with that haunting piece of analogue electronica by pioneers White Noise, "The Visitation".

Please note the UK moves their clocks forward into British Summer Time next weekend, while I believe North America have done this already.

Thanks to Advent's Alan Benjamin for pointing out a typo in the latest play list. The last of Advent tunes being played this coming week should have been written as: 'In Illo Tempore - To Dunsinane'. (Not a repeat play of "The Uncharted Path'). Apologies. Dick Heath

I'm sure you have all heard of the very sad news of Allan Holdsworth's untimely death a few weeks ago, and thought about his legacy. As many have written, Allan was a major innovator and virtuoso guitarist. Personally it was that unique playing style that hit me hearing him on record for the first time in the mid 70's: it continues to do so. Then getting to gigs on those increasingly rare visits to his homeland, and seeing him live. I first met him in the mid 90's at the Old Vic Tavern in Nottingham in the mid 90's, an intended interview became an unrecorded hour long friendly exchange about  families - and then the night before some b*****d had stolen the band's equipment from the back of a van. Then the joy of seeing him at three separate gigs in one year, in the mid's naughties. In between, I got invited to contribute in a small way to '16 Men of Tain', accepted with great pride.

The show tonight is based on invited requests, some of my favourites, a couple of tribute pieces: in my attempt to demonstrate the virtuosity and the breadth of musics that Allan contributed. I believe one recording might get its premier airing on radio.

The edited show will be issued over the coming weekend along with a bonus tribute recording made 10 days ago during the university vacation. If you have not received download notification of previous ALT2 Show recordings, please email me so you get included.
