Bushman's Revenge's and Ulver's.
I agree (I presume) that there's got to be something special with a live album for it to top an album-of-the-year-list. Most live albums, for me, works best (or only) as an introduction to a band (I easily prefer live albums to studio tracks compilations when artist investigation is concerned), or to showcase what a band sounds like live in a period of time (see Rush and Motorpsycho f. ex.). I'd have a hard time picking a live album for a top spot on an album-of-the-year-list if it didn't contain new music and/or tracks that differed substantially from the studio versions, but on Bushman's Fire and ATGCLVLSSCAP we get both of that, in spades.
King Crimson's Live in Toronto is another live album that probably will end up in my top 20, but a bit further down the list probably, as it's got a good sound, and the band's in top form, but the album contains, mostly, previously released music, and the tracks doesn't differ too much from the studio versions, I feel (but that doesn't bother me too much on a personal level, as I'm only very familiar with less than half of their essential output, i.e. studio albums and highest rated live albums). |
^ I normally go straight to studio albums when I want to discover an
artist, I only get to live albums much later, with the exception of when
I find a copy ("Live at the Rainbow" is the only Focus album I have for
example). I did come across a vinyl copy of that Ulver album but I didn't know if it was good so I left it there ![Embarrassed Embarrassed](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gif)

I prefer to go for a studio album in that case, as well. "...if a studio album's not available" should've been the rest of that sentence.
On ATGCLVLSSCAP, which is almost as much a studio album as a live one, Ulver uses samples of songs from albums from much of their extensive back catalogue, turning their old songs into dark krautrock soundscapes. Calling it their "finest work to date" may not be an exaggeration. You should've grabbed that LP, Sam! ![LOL LOL](smileys/smiley36.gif)
Regarding Bushman's Revenge, don't know if fusion's your thing, but if the missing link between Albert Ayler and Black Sabbath sounds enticing to you, and you want to go the studio album route to check them out, I recommend Thou Shalt Boogie!, their progiest and spaciest release. On Bushman's Fire, which, for now at least, seams to be the end of the road for their prog and space excursions (on their latest studio album, Jazz, fritt etter hukommelsen, they've come back down to earth and gone back to their jazz roots) they're joined by David Wallumrød on organ and Kjetil Møster on sax, and especially the latter (the man responsible for my album of the year last year) takes the three tracks on the album ("Yoga", an extended version of "Baklengs inn i fuglekassa" from TSB!, " Total f**king Marmalade", a new composition for the occasion, a gig I was lucky enough to attend, the most ferocious live performance I've ever experienced, and their live favourite, Sonny Sharrock's "As We Used To Sing") to new atmospheric heights. Highly recommended! ![Thumbs Up Thumbs Up](smileys/smiley20.gif)
