Nick I've lost track of Townsend long ago, although I do have two more albums post Synchestra, I don't enjoy them half as much as I do with Terria or Synchestra. I honestly think Synchestra is his best album featuring his strongest songwriting and coolest ideas. Keep at it my friend I'm sure your gonna love it

Yeah I've been spinning some 80s albums lately and just enjoying guilty pleasures. Some of them are really fun even if not "prog greats". Today: Genesis - Shapes Rush - Signals |

I only have three or four metal bands that I'm completely obsessed in, and one of them you would likely go mental over now considering your current metal bender, My Dying Bride! Their stuff is heavy on atmosphere and slow dirge-like riffing, but sometimes frantic and thrashy too. Check out especially the 2:10 minute point onwards, mate, I think you'll approve....and all their albums get vinyl releases ![]() Very proggy, good mix of clean theatrical gothic vocals and delivish growls, tons of organ/symphonic keyboards and beautiful poetic lyrics. Their albums are always an instant buy for me, although I don't actually have their latest one yet...which means it WASN'T an instant buy in this instance! ![]() |

Firstly. Happy Birthday to Audun ( The Bearded Bard). Cake and prog was hopefully maxed out for you on Sunday. ;)
Jim (Finnforest) glad to see you spinning Invisible touch by Genesis. I really like it personally and say what you will about the 'Brazilian' but I think it's brilliant and it always makes me giggle. Banks is having just too much fun! Lol Michael (Aussie Byrd- Bro) I'm glad to hear that Headspace's All that you fear is gone is starting to work its magic on you. I know, like most albums, it's a real grower but I am surprised its Wilson's vocals for you that are taking the longest to appreciate. Lol if anything I would think that Wilson would be loved instantly by many in our lovely prog community because his voice is like a direct combination of Freddy Mercury & Jon Anderson....hell you can even throw in a canary in my opinion too! Just my thoughts, but I think the man can sing his ass off. I am also sticking with Headspace's latest to be in my top 5 so far in 2016. It's been a great year. Music today and yesterday. Slightly getting ready for my Devin Townsend concert tonight. ;) The Devin Townsend Project-- addicted. Godsmack-- 1000HP ( absolutely love it. Sam. You will to. I know you like these guys like I do. ) Opeth-- Ghost Reveries ( listened to this traveling back to Toronto on a greyhound bus from London and it knocked me right out. How the time flies when you hear such clever musical arrangements.) Pink Floyd-- Shine on...live 1988 ( Gilmour lead Floyd in the spotlight and the performance of Dogs of War is awesome. Great set list too. 17 tracks of gold. ) Peter Gabriel-- 3 (melt) family snapshot really is lovely. The closer BIKO is still my favourite though. Magenta-- Seven ( I really forgot how charming Christina Boothe's voice is. Envy is just an amazing song and an awesome tribute to Genesis's Entangled. Lots of similarities done by Rob Reed there. Devin Townsend-- synchestra ( this album is weird. I need for time with it but I do appreciate what I am hearing. ) |

I gotta say the first three Zepp albums are my favorites. They all score evenly with me but III will usually nudge out the other two if I'm in a particular mood. I can recall a time (1970) when Let It Bleed and LZ III played regularly on my Sony reel to reel tape deck and Gimme Shelter and Since I've Been Loving You were regularly requested by my buddies. Sam, I recently picked up Different Creatures on vinyl but I haven't gotten into it yet. ![]() Your post tells me I should get around to that.

Birge, Gorge, Shiroc - Defense De AMAAAAAAAAAZING! Jeeez, I like improv music and all, but never thought it could get this exciting. A mix of Silver Apples and Sonny Sharrock is a comparison that has been made once. I'll go with that, adding Fred Frith, John Zorn, and bits of Tangerine Dream along the line. If you ever wanted to get into free-form improv, but never managed to do so, this is where you need to go.
Exmagma - Goldball Decent jazz-fusion with nice variations. A bit in a krauty manner in the dynamic range, but very fusiony nonetheless - loads of guitar, Rhodes, and drums going all over the place. It's not great. Just good. Pretty enjoyable, though, if you are into that sort of thing. |
