*spits beer all over monitor AND keyboard*

yeah right... sure it is...

I'd make him an AR offer he can't refuse.

$500 bucks... a case of beer and a phone number for a freaky sex crazed redhead that hopefully hasn't been laid in 10 years LOL

PA has some of the least obtrusive ads on the internet. A little 100 by 500 or so banner at the top of some pages that (regardless of whether you click on them or not), will be giving a tiny bit of money to the site owners to help keep it running. Really doesn't seem like that big of a deal just to turn off adblock for this site.

Clap Thank you. We really try to use the least intrusive ads.

The least instrusive ads, maybe.
To get some money to pay the broadband and all that stuff, I can understand it.

Yet, just surfing on the frontpage of the site and being blocked WITHOUT ANY WARNING THE PREVIOUS DAYS that there was a "anti adblock" tool added to the site was rather displeasant. This way of acting is just rude.

I could have accepted to consider to turn off AdBlock if I had a message in my box when connecting to the forum asking to do so. But the way it had been managed just infuriated me: I will NEVER turn AdBlock off from now on, I'm pretty adamant about it.

By the way, while I'm not an expert on the financial gestion of a website, I tend to think the same thing than Micky: an incitation to donations could be a good idea, rather than a brutal blocking of the AdBlock users.

Another way to get some coins (even if I'm not sure it's a good example): I'm on SoundCloud, and this platform offers extra tools for the professional musicians. Couldn't PA launch a special version of the site for the professionals of music?
For example, some people use the forum to promote records, bands, concerts... Etc. When these announcements come from labels, bands managers and other entreprises, couldn't there be a way to have them pay for having some promotional tools on the site and the forum?

that gets into some heavy stuff here man...the financials of the site. A bit of past history and some blood especially with the old collaborators. Much arose out of the pay for play mess that was Torman Maxt. HeartLOL
In which the integrety of the site was compromised for the sake of pay for play.

For that.. there was, likely still is among site oldtimers that this site is a for profit driven endeavor. Rubbed a lot of people the wrong way who volunteered their time to build it.  With direct user support.. not blind paypall donations.. would need to come transparancy as to needs.  Costs.  The owner sure didn't seem to want to accept that as part of us stepping foraward to accept the costs.

that said... I'm sure some click on them.  Most don't. If the finanicals are a problem. I might suggest something different than standard obstrusive internet ads selling god knows what kinds of women's fashion (SPANX anyone LOL) or penis enlargement products to prog fans.

perhaps the site might consider going with something like Outbrain and Taboola.

I've used addblock here and elsewhere from my home computer (I can't from work) for over three years, and I've never had a problem so far.

And I missed out the start of this controversy, but now that I'm home, I have no anti-addblock message

I do remember that in the nascent early days of PA that M@X pulled out immediately a very intrusive add upon my request, because it was trying to install crap onto my work computer...

I'bve never had a problem with PA since, despite the fact that when I search some equipement on the web for and from work, and I see adds for that on PA (and other sites I frequent) for that equipment for months on end... But that's nothing to do with PA, IMHO, just normal web indiscretion

=======

I actually fund yearly a couple of prog site (for which I've not invested vast amount of time and work like here for PA) so they can remain add-less.

One has to make a choice >> free usage of a add-riddled site or pay-for-use (though not manadatory, far from it) for an add-less site

Now that I've seen the Ad for the Russian dating site on the front page, I'm inclined to drop opposition to the ads.....   Wink

I happily contribute to one of those 'other' prog sites to keep it ad free & personally I am very happy to do so as I like it that way. Having said that I don't find the ad's on PA that bad at all. Though it is slightly annoying that since I was checking the products the company I work for makes I get nothing but ad's for Gillette Razors. I don't need to be told to buy these, I make the bloody things!! TongueLOL

So I'm assuming the rest of you on this page are also finding the site somewhat crippled by all these animated ads lately? Pages failing to load and needing to be constantly refreshed (Oh, but don't worry, those ads load perfectly each and every time! ), getting halfway through typing a response and then finding that the ads have done a reload which freezes the page so you have to start over....sh*t, I could go on! Just unbearable.

I haven't got one of those... and just checked. My ad-blocker is alive and fine and doing well.

I suppose M@X did the right thing and 86'd that clunker of a stupid idea. Unless he is more devious than I give him credit for and he realizes one way to drive troublesome, reactionary elements from the site is to piss them off enough to where they decide to  leave. Which they'd likely do. In a battle of principle vs. spamming a beloved forum... principle wins 7 days a week and twice on Sunday .  LOL

I don't even notice the ads are there, I certainly never read them and don't see the point of adding unnecessary blocking s/ware

It's a matter of principle. I will turn of adblockers when I choose to, not when a site makes me.

I just has an ad start autoplaying with sound at high volume. The ad continued to reload itself when finished, so that the very loud interruption never ended. It was for Scotch tape.

I was listening to Genesis' Music Box at the time, while reading reviews of that record. It was a horrible interruption.

Thanks to the site managers for all your work, just a little feedback about some of the ads.
