I think the belief system that Robert adheres to is not exactly about that kind of thing, as it tends to raise an ego level that would not necessarily be good for the art or the work. It's not what the "work" he does is about at all! This was very much in the eyes of Gurdgieff and Ouspensky, and I think there is a relation here. At least, from a directing/acting stand point the cohesion of the work makes more sense with these processes in place.
The few comments about their rehearsals and ways to create some music would also suggest there is a similar link to the work that Peter Brook has also done with actors for 50 years, and they use many exercises and suggestions by those folks previously. I have written, elsewhere, about these similarities and included some exercises used on stage that can also be used by musicians if they weren't so full of themselves and were willing to explore new territories and feelings.
See the movie "Meetings with Remarkable Men", and nothing really is clear until you see the synchronicity in the end of the film! THAT would be the natural and desired consequence of the work involved!

Yes, not only does he seem really arrogant and pretentious, but I find a lot of his guitar playing to be pretty dull.

Robert is a an example of an extremely gifted guitarist, and a musical legend, in the open ended world of prog ,the disciplinal approach, he has towards guitar playing in general shows he is not a showoff or the usual, lighting solos, knows that he is a man of restraint letting the composition speak for itself at least 3 songs in kc catalog such as starless ,larks in tongue aspic (part 2), 20th century schizoid man, all show his command of his instrument. This as to what has he done lately, simply does not hold a valid argument.

The concept of overrating is overrated.

I think that Fripp is overrated by some but is underrated by more. He's definitely not a musical god who can do no wrong; I frankly find some of his material absolutely awful.
But there's no denying that he's innovative, influential, and one of the most prolific, inventive creative minds of 20th century music. And very versatile, too! Regardless of whether you care for King Crimson's material, you can't deny that he can get such a great range of sounds out of his instrument, not even considering how many thoughtfully composed songs and orchestrations he has under his belt.

that's a novel idea.. overrated? Depends. One of the most important figures in prog.. he ventures into overrated territory if one tried to claim him as THE most important. That title belongs to, like him or popular or not, Emerson. No Emerson.. no prog as we knew it. You can't say that about Fripp...

Indeed. Made you spell it out. The only issue for me would be my general bias toward guitar over keyboards.

In fact, the comparison between Fripp and Emerson is quite interesting. Fripp is often complimented for his restraint and lack of showboating, which is quite a contrast from Emerson who didn't even want a guitarist (electric guitarist) in the band to compete with. Sometimes I ponder whether Fripp took that restraint too far.

One of my favorite solos from Fripp is from the track St. Elmo's Fire on Brian Eno's Another Green World. Crazy good. This track also has Phil Collins on percussion!

Pure class; but couldn't keep a band together to save his life. Ideal session guitarist.
