You should start reading ero-guro. There are seriously dark, true horror there. I can list you loads of good mangakas from this genre. If you want anime.. pretty hard to find out. But "Mr Arashi's Amazing Freak Show" (Midori: Shoujo Tsubaki) from Maruo Suehiro, probably the pioneer ero guro mangaka, was adapted into an anime film. And it's excelent.

Mononoke is cool, like a horror version of mushishi. It's more unsettling than scary though.

I personally haven't watched it yet, but really want to soon- but maybe Monster? I hear it's a creepy, psychological horror. It's pretty long but I've never heard/read a negative thing about it.

The only one that I can really think of is Higurashi no Nako Koro Ni, but you have to watch the second season Kai as well to really get it all.

I like the music and I like the setting for BB.  Other than that, I can't really tell you why I like it.

And I need to stop looking for new series to watch, because my list is growing and I just don't have the time to watch them all!  I'm sure we're all in the same "predicament", though.  My package from Amazon finally showed up tonight with Ergo Proxy, Phantom: Requiem For The Phantom and GitS Arise.  I've also added Texhnolyze, Paranoia Agent and Gurren Lagaan to my list.  Good problem to have, I guess.

Also, to completely contradict what I just said, but are there any good horror series out there?  Not fantasy horror or anything like that, but like a more modern day setting that's actually kind of creepy?

The music probably has something to do with it. I didn't like Black Butler, but the music kept me watching.

I like Darker Than Black, but it's pretty vague at world-building, as sleeper said, and even at storytelling. What I will say is that it is much better and clearer on repeat watches. They give you information in the first half that you don't understand until the second half, but you forget that information because you didn't understand it.

Another one I completed recently that I rather enjoyed is Chihayafuru.

There's a great story there but DtB sucks at world building, there are some pretty fundamental questions regarding the setting that will never be answered in either season.

It's funny, I just finished episode 15, and I'm finally starting to enjoy it.  Might need to go back and start over now.

I just wish I could get a standard blu ray set and not the ginormous special edition that's somewhat expensive.

Black Butler and Noir are a couple of other series I've been watching recently that have been pretty good.  BB is a strange one that I can't really describe why I like it, because when I think about the premise, it's kind of dumb. LOL

I've finished Bakemonogatari and now I'm watching Nisemonogatari. Great visuals but there are lots of humorous dialogue with puns and jokes which probably only work if you understand Japanese and know Japanese culture.

DtB totally disappointed me -  a lot. I had no idea why this show was hailed so much.

I haven't seen SEL, bur Haibane didn't connect to me. I couldn't connect to any of the characters and their story. So it kind of gradually imploded as it continued.

Ergo Proxy is one of my Top 5.

Also: I've seen Episode 1 of Texhnolyze and was stunned. Great storytelling. Though i stopped it because it wasn't what i was looking to watch at that moment it turnt out. So i put it on hold.

All were pretty good. Though Braves is the only one finished so far i'm pretty happy watched these shows.

Gangsta is an improved Black Lagoon. More dark and depth to the characters and setting. Main characters is a duo of neutral "handymen" - one is a deaf mercenary trained since a child and the other is a gigolo with a hyper memorization ability. Real unique imo.

Braves is about 6 heroes (Saints in this show) that have specialized abilities chosen by the gods to defeat risen demons that come every X years. Though this time there are 7 and so this cour involves inner conflicts between the characters trying to figure out which is the fake when they meet at the rendezvous.

Charlotte is an interesting show. Beginning as a slightly slice of life with a "monster of the week" style, it involves a world in which some children develop super powers during adolescent. Characters are likable and its pretty/well produced. There is a twist about half way through that makes the show have a much more interesting plot though - so that was super enjoyable.

Nice, for me, I ended up watching more shows than I had ever thought at the beginning. The 9 shows (from worst to best) are as follows:

1. Prison School

2. Gakkou Gurashi!

3. Classroom Crisis

4. Shimoneta

5. Gangsta.

6. God Eater

7. Charlotte

8. Aoharu x Machinegun

9. Dragon Ball Super

yeah, the most shocking thing is that the long-running show is at the bottom of this list (I guess i wasn't as into this one as the others, but i'm still going to watch it regardless). This order may change at any time, however.

Ergo Proxy's an excellent series that I love the art style for, I wish it was a style that was still in use.

Yosh*toshi ABe, the guy who did a lot of character design for SEL did a lot of Haibane Renmei himself. It's def different, but I think still enjoyable for people who like SEL. He was involved with character design for Texhnolyze.

I don't find SEL and Haibane Renmei all that similar, but both are quite good.
