It is a legit site, and have been so all along. The prices have actually increased a bit, they used to be cheaper. One of the reasons for the lower cost presumably because they were among the first stores to sell digital music back in the 1990's, and at the time they were a marketplace solely for independent music (i.e. non-label). As they have expanded they had to increase the price though, presumably due to label pressure when various small and later not so small labels started to use this service. One of the reasons for the lower cost is that you only get thew one download: If you suffer a hard drive crash later, you cannot download the music again for free, like you can on iTunes and other services.
