PH appeared on a very famous kids' show back in the late 70's. The footage was thought long gone, but here it is. From my VdGG Facebook page: A major (or at least majorly fun) video has now surfaced of Peter Hammill on the Play Away kids' TV show from 1979. Many have known about this appearance, a few even remembered seeing it, but as with a lot of old BBC shows, it was feared to be wiped away. But it's been found! Play Away was a very famous kids' show that ran from 1971 to 1984. A lot of British kids grew up watching it. I suppose in the U.S. our equivalent would be Sesame Street. It's not strange to have celebrities on Sesame Street, but this would be like having Captain Beefheart (or some other cult music hero) making an appearance... which would be (wonderfully) strange.
Shortly before the TV show aired, Melody Maker ran a lengthy article on / interview with Peter Hammill that talked about his then-current album pH7. It also covered other stuff, as journalist Karl Dallas reported: Peter has bought a house in Wiltshire, his wife is pregnant with a child who'll be born on the anniversary of his move to the country, he's been playing with the local cricket team, and he's even written a song for BBC TV's 'Play Away' kids' show. Actually, when he confessed that, he immediately tried to swear me to secrecy, but I couldn't promise. Peter Hammill on 'Play Away' was too abrupt a change of image to leave unrecorded. Especially when, it emerges, he'll be dressed up as one of King Arthur's knights of the Round Table. [Hammill says], "A friend I was at university with works for Play Away and they decided in this new series [season] that they were going to have various songs from people like George Chisholm, Isla St Clair, and all this sort of area. But he'd always wanted to make a film about Tintagel, more or less about King Arthur, so he asked me if I'd write a song. There's a little bit about 'If you come to Tintagel now, there aren't really any knights, but there are lots of jolly people and the castle's very nice.' So you can see the sort of level that the song's pitched at. I just danced around Tintagel, miming in medieval drag. It'll be great if someone just happens to see it, and they say, 'It can't be? Is it?' But I don't want it publicized too much so people start tuning in specifically." Thanks to Laurie Parsons, Sbarticus Teknik, Steven Hargraves, and Adrian Kuky for finding, editing, digitizing, and presenting this historic find. Edited by bucka001 - August 10 2015 at 10:14 |

Any British folk on this forum (and of a certain age) that remember Play Away? From people I've talked to it sounds like it was a very famous show back then.

I remember Play Away, but I don't think I could actually watch an entire episode again!

Musically, it sounds like it would have been more at home on Fool's Mate than the stuff he was doing at the time in ph7 or The Future Now.

Surprisingly good! It sounds like it was all his own work with
the instrumentation and arrangement, to boot.
I wonder if he ever considered doing an entire album of children’s songs.
