Hello everybody,
I searched the forum to see if anybody has mentioned this band, and I didn't find anything. Well it makes sense because they were never famous outside Greece, but it's really a great prog band (and one of my favorites) They played during the 70's and they were made a big proposition by an american record company which they declined for some reason unknown.. You can't really compare their sound with anyone elses because besides the classic prog/psychedelic elements they had several traditional greek music elements which blend in perfectly with their songs. Their guitarist is considered (by people outside of greece too) as one of the best unknown guitarist of that era... I wanted to see if anyone has heard of them.. if you don't I think many of you would appreciate their music, you can look them up on youtube, and their discography is available on piratebay (I own all their records but i don't think you can buy them outside Greece) The lyrics were always in english so that won't be a problem. My personal recommendations are Destruction, The Killer (from the Phos album), Every dream come to an end, Starvation, Something in the air.. I'm going to stop here because i'm going to list all of their songs :P You may find them under the name Socrates drank the conium or just Socrates..
P.S. I was lucky to see them live recently, and I must say eventhough it was in a small club and only 50 people were there, it was one of the best concerts i've attended...

I love this album - every track! - And Vangelis on keyboards - gave their sound a sort of ethereal and melancholy  quality-
Progressive, psychedelic, folk, & Greek - I only have it on vinyl under the title "Phos."

I'm really happy to hear from someone who is not greek :)
Yes Vangelis played with them only on the Phos album, and I agree that he gave a totaly different dimension to their music.. If you are intersted in the melodies that inspired these songs, i can tell you.. some of the songs on phos are kind of ''covers'' of  traditional instrumental songs from Ipeiros , the mountain side. (of course Mountais is one of them :) )

I have only one Socrates LP called On The Wings. I haven't played it in so many years but I remember it was good, though I never considered it to be a prog albums but just a rock album.

"Phos" album is definitely prog, but the rest of their discography is mainly rock with some prog glimpses. Doubt they can fit in PA (maybe under prog-related) but would recommend that "Phos" album to everyone

WOW!

The same guitar from Akritas and some of Aphrodite's Child.

Love it.

Personally their bass/ drums arangements were always prog to me , but anyway, it's a matter of perception. A great band nevertheless!

Glad you liked them ! I also had the chance to see Demis Rousos (rip) from AC (in a totally different band) but was totally worth it !

Not really prog, more like neo-psychedelia form the 80s with some prog elements :)

And of course Dionysis Savvopoulos' early 70's releases.

Was just listening to Phos again, can't but post the youtube for everyone to enjoy.

I don't know much Greek prog, but Axis must be well thought of? Or are they discounted because they worked in France?
