Yup, but a laugh with a tear in my eye to say the least. I remember buying this on vinyl when it first came out. I looked at the cover and read the song titles over and over thinking to my self "Really? Should I buy this? I mean I love these guys but...REALLY??"

Maybe I should start a new game here. Take an album cover and add thought bubbles to the artists appearing on them. Hmmmm?? Maybe later today I'll start one.

If Hipgnosis was responsible for this cover, it represents the absolute nadir of their creativity. Carl Palmer once remarked that the photo reminded him of something from the Bee Gees, so I take it the band wasn't very happy with it either.

The art direction was by some guy named Bob Defrin. The photography wasby Jim Houghton. But the real culprit had to be Ahmet Ertegun the president of Atlantic Records at the time. He wanted to turn ELP into the same pop stars as Yes and Genesis had become at the time. So try not to blame the band too much for this. Many a fine artists has been derailed due to higher authorities in the business. Music, movies, whatever. He who holds the purse strings ultimately has the driver's seat.

I remember being shocked when they did TOTP . Was it really them , wtf ? I was only watching this for Pan's People ( or whatever they were called at that point)

QUESTION: HOW DO EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER change A light bulb? A: They don't. Drummer Carl Palmer's personal karate instructor holds the bulb steady while 63 roadies turn the lighting rig.

I remember in the 70's playing in a prog-rock band that had picked up on a Greg Lake comment from Circus or Creem Magazine that was the standard line to me whenever I was late or needed to change a time for a rehearsal, Greg had said " Drummers are Bummers". I got that one thrown at me alot. I thought about that line and just chuckled at Lake's lyrical prowess.

^ Love Beach is a great contender.........
However, I don't find any humour in Love Beach.
ELP humour is to me, things like Jeremy Bender, Nutrocker, Are You Ready, Eddy?, Benny The Bouncer........etc.
maybe, even if show-boating, Emerson's Bach and Tchaikovsky's renditions maybe considered humorous.
ELP humour comes in many forms, Benny The Bouncer is one of them.   And why not, (if you had the chops to pull it off.....?.......)

On one of my CD's Emerson introduces Tarkus as 'here is something you can all sing along to'. They were never that po-faced about things as the press liked to paint them as being. They did however enjoy the trappings of being rock stars though and the shows were massive undertakings. However it would have been an event to see ELP play live in those days. They were not just any band.

By some amusing coincidence while clearing out the shed today I found an old ELP tour programme that belongs to my wife (from the days before I knew her... some dark secrets are best kept quiet methinks)... it's undated but I believe it comes from 1972.

Now, why should this warrant a mention in this thread you may ask... well... it's one of the strangest tour programmes I've ever seen...
