Ok say what would be the best possible IQ line up you could have? Nicholls or Menel ( I respect Paul a lot and like his recent solo album BUT has to be Pete!) Orford or Westworth (no contest here , sorry Mark!) Holmes or ermmm (well bit of a 'Hobsons Choice' but anyway Mike is a legend!) Esau or Jowitt ( now its gets tricky but I'm going for Tim because of that fretless bass work on The Wake , so memorable and beautiful) Cook or Edwards ( Cook is such a good solid drummer and actually has come back stronger and better. Check out The Wake Live. The guy is superb .However that said Edwards is one of the best English drummers around and Frequency has a level of playing that Cookie is probably not quite at. So has to be Andy, sorry Paul I do feel guilty I really do!) So for me the perfect IQ line up is Nicholls, Holmes , Orford, Edwards and Esau. Basically the 'classic' line up but with a different drummer. What do you think?

^ Andy Edwards is just AMAZING !! I don't even have Frequency, or any Frost, just MAGENTA, and he kicks severe ass on that.

I was lucky enough to see him play with IQ just after he joined. I know your a bit of a vinyl junky Tom but the CD release of Frequency does include a bonus live DVD with Edwards in the band playing among other things Harvest Of Souls. Obviously worth having! btw I left off Neil Durrant in my post above. Annoying brain failure caused by posting too early in the morning! I would still pick Martin although Neil is well above Mark and has brought a lot to the table on TROB.

Richard, I appreciate you realising my short-comings.........
Yes, you are very lucky to have caught Andy in action. You know I am limited on these recent greats..... You stated that Cookie is not up to Andy's level....... Both incredibly astounding drummers.
I am truly sorry that I am such an arrogant person - I do appreciate digital things and CD's etc, but for my personal tastes and really what truly excites me (aside from CD only releases) - I do chase what my passion is....

I just got my very first IQ album, the latest, Road of Bones, after such great reviews it's got all last year, and I'm really enjoying it. Still, I guess I've got to get used to the music more in order to fully apreciate it. Perhaps I'll have to get a bit more from them later on.

Tom you are great just as you are . I know that both you and another friend of mine on this board Nick (progbethyname) love your vinyl and there is nothing wrong with that or for being passionate about it. I'm basically a bit lazy and clumsy so its probably best I stick with CD's

As Tom suggests , Ever is another good port of call. I also like The Seventh House a lot. Frequency kicks serious arse if you like music to leap out of your stereo and grab you by the throat

Mmm... oh well, I guess those would be the better albums to go with. However, I would like to start with some 80's music from them, since they sould seem to be among the big ones for Neo... still, that is the weakest rated decade for them... I wonder if perhaps I could go with some live album or compilation that may cover the best of the 80's?

^As far as the 80's go, I'd recommend their 'Tales from the Lush Attic'. The best one of the 80's imo.

^ Agreed - Lush Attic is fantastic as far as 80's Prog goes - these guys were on fire for this album.
The Wake is excellent as well, but suffers from the 'typical' 80's production - but since the quality of the compositions and playing is so high, this production is very minor - it's mainly the drums.

Attic also has a nice reissue (total remix by Mike Holmes) while The Wake just had the standard remaster job which adds very little. Forever Live is an excellent live album. I like to dig that out occasionally as it includes a smoking version of No Love Lost from Nomzamo and also a saxophone free version of the very underrated track Human Nature from the same album. You also get a couple of excerpts from The Last Human Gateway which work well imo and cracking versions of the title track of The Wake and Widows Peak.

Becoming quite attached to Neil Durant's keys on the road of bones. But for long term. Yeah. Orford is the man!! ;) I'd go Nicholls, Orford, Jowitt, Cook and of course that Holmes guy. ;)
