Hi

Welcome back from....? Thanks for those nice words. Last show before a 4 week Easter break this week, so tune in. Show half collated, so the obvious tributes to Andy Fraser and Daevid Allen. This will be the last show to have a Robert Wyatt feature (or two). Ditto Kevin Gilbert.  At last getting into Steven Wilson's newie - much prefer "Raven" for Adam Holtzman's occasional jazz solos - so a long tune. America does Canterbury in the form of Ut Gret. The obvious from Chicago's second eponymous album (not "Chicago 2" as the ill-researched writer at Classic Rock persistently wrote in a recent article on Terry Kath). Full listing tomorrow... I hope.

Hi

I regularly check for responses here and if nothing appears after 30-45 minutes, I just concentrate on messages coming (via my main connection to the world):

No correspondence comes this way  most weeks.
So apologies, but try the email address above when the show is live.

Regards

This Thursday's show.

We continue to listen to the outtakes, alternative arrangements and demos that have appeared on the excellent 20th Anniversary 'Thud' by Kevin Gilbert. More new jazz from Criss Cross Records artists, (correction we played: '38-58' last week by Alex Sipiagin, not 'Trio Whale', which gets played this). New bassists albums from Eberhard Weber and Marcus Miller. All too brief tribute to Daevid Allen. More from the Unthanks and VdGG. Anne Briggs is there as a reminder that Jimmy Page didn't compose 'Blackwater Side' as suggest on the first LZ album and alas at least two American guitarists have carried the error across on to their own albums.... A couple newish progressive albums that just about meet my criteria for the genre, i.e. have to show some evolution aka progression. In particular Ut Gret with some nice soften fusion between Henry Cow/Soft Machine and the Nerve Institute.

Somewhat of a Kevin Gilbert special to celebrate the release of the 20th Anniversary edition of 'Thud'; we'll concentrate on 3 alternative versions of our favourite tunes. Criss Cross Records continue to surprise with their roster of jazz artists, this time trumpeter Alex Sipiagin (and David Binney is in the mix too). For the fifth week running, more from Polyethylene Pet's forthcoming retrospective. New prog releases from Van Der Graaf and Neal Morse Band. Heavy chamber rock(??) that will do as a genre from Serbian duo 2Cellos (haver you checked out the full You Tube video of 'Thunderstruck'?) ; the Serbian music also continues with Yagull. Having read an article in Classic Rock magazine re Chicago's Terry Kath with the author referring to 'Chicago 2' several times....just a reminder that Chicago never released an album with that title...

At last got round to listening to other Moonjune releases and there some fine music in there;  sosamples from Yagul and Teslal (love the gamelan backing on the latter). Dieter Ilk Trio has got positive comments, so more this week. Polyethylene PET +1's remarkable 4 CD  retrospective is absolutely full of gems. The more avant end of Robert Wyatt's discography with something from a more recent Michael Mantler album. Slowly Rolling Camera continues with its popularity - and should be top of our Jazzwise chart next month. And there's 2Cellos: check out the extended You Tube version of what we will be playing on the show in a few days time.

The jazz section continues with new releases, although the Machine dates back to '74, and now available because of  Cuneiform's  restorative archaelogy on some errant recording tapes. The excellent Mark Wingfield recording is a cut or two above the usual guitar-based jazz rock fusion. And I've remember to bring back Tobias Christl, here doing an interesting rearrangement of a SImon & Garfunkel classic. After some very positive comments last week about former Savoy Brown vocalist Chris Youlden*, hence three more example . Belatedly discovered a 5 CD set of Richard Thompson outtakes, live recordings for the 2004 and CD3 continues in the vein of 'Music Of The Millennium' (on Thursday in the forms of Townshend and Drake covers). Not so sure about Clas Yngstrom's Hendrix tribute (being too close to the originals doesn't help -- Clas check out Nguyen Le's 'Purple' for guidance), anyway gone for the Buddy Miles cover...................... New Steven Wilson album: with a quick flick through, I don't hear any standout tracks (cf. 'Luminol') but this may take time. And finally, that joyous retrospective collection of music on  Polyethylene Pet +1** boxset (due out 1st May)...Kim at Precognitive Records  has plans for a competition when several folks could win this excellent set; details here and during the show soon.

* where is he now?
**Note to Kim: as a retired polymer engineer/technologist, Polyethylene Pet (especially when abbreviated to PP), is causing some right confusion. PET (what Coke drink usually come in) stands for poly(ethylene terephthalate) hence the band in full could called be "polyethylene polyethylene terephthalate". While in short, PP stands for "polypropylene". Perhaps a reason why I didn't include Richard Thompson's cover of Plastic Bertram single, otherwise us engineers would end up right confused.

This week we continue to investigate new releases from Cuneiform, Moonjune and Precognitive Records ... and I admit checking out one new album, after I thought I had put the show together, had me doing a substitution. Impi was a S African brass rock band of the early 70's, arrangement wise echoing Chicago but off target with lyrics (although listening to words of the tune to be played, had me thinking of a certain Oscar). Getting into the jazz fusion inspired by the trip hop (I think) of Portishead etc. Been a fan of Omar Dykes for over a decade and the new compilation has a pretty good selection.  And there's more: is Panzerpappa RIO ?, US folkies I've never heard of before, and back again at last, a classic by Kevin Gilbert (who also remastered the Stray album being played).

Another 2 hour scan of the wide world of interesting popular music, too often forgotten elsewhere.

New album from King Crimson, highly praised by various jazz and rock critics/reviewers, and I'm taking the Trev L. recommended track. The other album mentioned on Facebook, as received from Amazon, revealed that all tracks are at the 10 minute or so length,  i.e. the John Scofield/Govt Mule  summit, is  held over with a couple of other long ones in place already. Newies are coming from our friends at Cuneiform, this week Kandinski Project. Chamber music of sorts from Chris Potter and Spark ... clearly this town is big enough with bands with very similar names. Several remasters, actually sounding like these provide better aural quality, than at least the original CD issues, e.g. the promise Supertramp, and couple of favourites by Spooky Tooth. Also tucked in there, (as part of  my continuing quest to discover blues from different countries), Joses Luis Pardo, an Argentinian based in Spain.
