 Topic: Country Joe & Fish: Are they Proto Prog?

Ok, I'm at it again. But this time I'm proposing the Country Joe and The Fish album Electric music for the mind and body. If you're not familiar with this psychedelic classic from 1967 (and you should be), it sounds like a cross between the Doors, electric blues and the avant garde, with very bold lyrics for the times.

Hmm.....the proto prog thing...again. Never was a big fan of Country Joe but to me I would place them in the psych blues rock area.

A hippy friend of my mother gave me sound Country Joe & The Fish albums back in the 60's. I never thought of them as prog, or prog related.

Do you think you might have a different opinion of the album as an adult? The music had a lot of similarity with the Doors due to the heavy use of organ and the Doors are considered proto.

Wu, you have my covered my sentiments to a tee. I did like "Fixin' to Die Rag" from Woodstock. I remember the F-bombs being delightful for this youngster at the time.

They did inspire artists who were, though, most notably their extensive use of organ and classical influence in general in rock music as well as their philosophical lyrics. I think "proto-prog" status is more a matter of historical context than what the artists actually played, or at least just as much.
Then again I consider The Doors more proto-goth than anything else, at least if you consider their ideological ethos, so I'm probably not the right person to ask.

Boy oh boy , electric Music For the Body and Mind - absolutely wonderful.....never thought of them as Proto, but appealing to many Proggers nevertheless. The Masked Marauder has an almost Canterbury feel (must be that organ...).

I remember when I first got a hold of that album during high school. Section 43 freaked me out!....in a wonderful way! Never thought of them as prog nor proto, but they had some experimental psych attributes to them which were absolutely thrilling to say the least.

That's my favorite track on Electric Music For The Mind And Body, "Section 43". Great track! I agree with the rest of the post. It was the age of experimentation, long songs with psychedelic influences. But quite outside the prog or proto prog spectre, I'd say. Only connected with them because many bands were doing long tracks and mixing different styles.
