I had a look through about 5 of the CD's cover booklets and they normally say music composed, arranged and played by Eloy.Usually the lyrics are written by one person (ie Rosenthal on the albums that he played on) and Frank B is credited with the story on one or two. |

I need to look through some of these booklets myself. I don't know about you, but I love the layout of the newer remasters from EMI.

I'm quite fond of Visionary but no one seems to mention it.

I bought that one a few nights ago. Can't wait to hear it. I also bought Live, Ocean 2: The Answer, Tides Return Forever, Reincarnation On Stage, Metromania, and Performance all around the same time. Yeah, I've become just a little obsessed with this band.

Planets is a great album! I love all of the textural keyboard work from Hannes Folberth on this one, Time To Turn, and Colours. From what I've been reading, it seems drummer Jim McGillivray wasn't a well-received member of Eloy even though he was a great drummer. I suppose people were longing for Rosenthal who played on Dawn, Ocean, and Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes?

Time To Turn and Planets were the first Eloy albums I heard. When I got more interested in synths in the 80's then Eloy were the band to go to.
Planets is the punchier of the 2 releases but Time To Turn contains my favourite bass playing by Klaus-Peter Matziol. I wish Eloy had made more albums like those. Metromania is good but that and Performance were more in the eighties style of rock music and I guess an attempt to update the trademark Eloy sound. I suppose one of the things that made Eloy interesting is that they never stood still. BTW I like Visionary but the keyboards seem to take a lessor role on that album. Its more AORish but quite a decent 3 star album imo.

All of the keyboard sounds from Folberth were so amazing, which came to full fruition on Planets. I LOVE the Introduction from Planets. It pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album. I can't say I'm expecting much from Performance or Metromania, but, as I mentioned maybe here or another thread, I'm sure I'll find something at least enjoyable from these two albums. As for Visionary, I can't wait to hear this one along with Tides Return Forever and Ocean 2: The Answer, but of their 'classic' period I have yet to hear Inside and Dawn as I'm still waiting for these to arrive in the mail.

Planets and Time to Turn are fantastic. I'll have to spin those today. Performance and Metromania are indeed more MOR, but both still pack a good punch. I like 'em.

I would start with Power and The Passion and then check out their albums chronologically from that point. The period Dawn to Silent Cries is probably their most popular although I am very fond of Time To Turn and Planets which are very 'synth heavy'.

I always figured Ocean through Colours and/or Planets-T2T were their more popular albums. I love all those, plus Performance and Metromania. I dig the synth-heavy stuff.

I have a few of the 70s albums on vinyl including the first one that sounds nothing like the later 70s material. I think it's all instrumental and heavier sort of like Sabbath if I remember correctly. Have to dig it out. Never could really get into them because of the vocals. Some of the instrumental stuff was freaked out but always sounded like someone else. That's my take. Got to give them credit for surviving so long.

I am one person who likes Frank's voice, but I think it has really declined to the point where it's hard to listen to Visionary, other than the Age of Insanity song that musically more than compensates. As a result, I don't have high hopes for the new album, which, while perhaps admirably ambitious, might not play well to the band's strengths Here is a website where you can search chart placements in Germany And here are Eloy's placements, showing that Silent Cries was their biggest commercially followed by Colours, then more or less a tie between Time to Turn and Ocean. Interesting that Planets was the only one between 1977 and 1982 that did not chart, not sure what happened.

I don't have high expectations for the new album either but if it's as good as Visionary (which I enjoy a lot), I'll be more than satisfied.
But hey, it's a new Eloy and it's 2017. |

^ .....AND, it's 'Part 1'..........
Visionary was a neat album, my only criticism is that it's too wordy. More instrumental stretches would've elevated it substantially. |

^ Let's hope for an all-instrumental Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes part 2 in 2024.
