Thought I'd get the ball of this important topic rolling with this video. It's very good, and very eye-opening, I'd recommend a watch. For the record no sexist comments will be tolerated in this thread - a little bit presumptuous of me on the admins, but I'm sure they agree. This is a thread to discuss feminism, it's importance and the prevalence of gender equality in society, local or global. Also feel free to share your own experiences.Chat away!
The Pessimist,
I listened to your youtube link. I am a woman, with a high corporate job, but her sulking exaggeration lost my interest.
Men between one another say what they want even, I have experienced that, I pay no attention as long as they don’t physical touch me ( I would punch them on their face if they did that, I seriously would smack them)
She exaggerates a bit to be honest, nor does she give us any statistics, women in parliament in the UK she must have forgotten that they had a female prime minister aka Margaret Thatcher, love her or hate her she definitely was an individual to deal with.
Also in terms of art paintings if more at the time would have been painted by women these too would have been most considered.
My hypothesis is that she is full of cow poop! To be honest
^ I too found the video a rather tiresome collection of particulars that the speaker extrapolates into an all encompassing general. However I'm puzzled by your reaction to unwelcome intimacy (i.e. being touched) I would ask the perpetrator to stop and if they didn't would certainly use physical force to stop them if required. Why would you lash out and strike someone in the first instance? (although I do concede that it's very difficult to think objectively in such threatening circumstances) Would you consider such actions (punching someone in the face) by a male as a reaction to unwelcome intimacy justified?
I don't understand your remark Men between one another say what they want - I take this to mean that you are resigned/happy to ignore sexist remarks you overhear and would only challenge actions with actions. Is this correct? Apologies if I misunderstand you but we might agree that the abusive content of speech alone can be sufficient to be extremely traumatizing and hurtful for an individual?
Re Margaret Thatcher. What is odd about her 4 consecutive terms in office is that she did not contribute anything towards providing a level playing field for gender at any time. When questioned about this, her supporters always stated that she wanted to succeed on a man's terms or not at all. Does this mean that to combat a patriarchal system, a female victor must embrace the handicap she is given from the outset? i.e. does she have to be better to be considered 'equal'? (Does the winner of the rat race have to behave like vermin to succeed?)

ExittheLemming,
I would think all here would understand that "punch someone in the face" was a figure of speech a metaphor, not literally or physically doing this!?
I do give members here more credit as in understanding what I meant, although one does need to have a sense of humor within I find it odd that you actually took that literally to be honest However, I will not go into politics here, as I said love or hate her, Margaret Thatcher was no push over even if I may not agree with some of her actions while agreeing with some points of view.

To be honest, I find it embarrassing if anyone whistles, especially if I think it might to me, I walk as fast as possible away from it, don't know what to do. A stranger grabbing my bum on the other-hand, oh no, I will not be liable for my actions because my natural reaction would probably be turning around a smacking him on the face (and no metaphor used here) that's plain rude! I don't go touching other people and personal space should be respected and be part of proper manners.
P.S. Sue me, grabbed my bum, got a fat slap on the face! Mine less infringed to be honest!

I think men and women should have equal rights. Can anyone name a right that men have in the United States (where I live and know about) that women do not have?If not, can we retire the whole subject?
Good point, Thellama I do have to add unfortunately not everyone is fortunate to live in the USA and women's rights are still not recognized in other countries i.e. in the Middle East inc. i.e. Saudi Arabia who are USA allies, women are not even allowed to drive cars, but gets worse because other countries their rights are completely stripped and they are not even allowed to have basic primary school education, I believe this is what should be discussed because it's not fair and women being married even before they reach adulthood is a disgrace. This is important to highlight, however to me this has not much to do with feminism, more to do with basic human rights and equality to all to be honest. Hugs
Kati, in your first reply to mine you say that (punching someone in the face) if they touched you without your consent (I seriously would smack them) is just a metaphor, not literally what you would do, something you expected me to treat in jest, yet in your second post you say that if someone touched you without your consent you would punch them in the face, no metaphor, figure of speech or humour intended. I'm having a hard time understanding you here, which is it?

ExittheLemming,
Understand what you will, I meant both, even if you might not see the difference in them. To be honest, I find it fruitless to go further into this.

OK, I think we have some common, albeit barren ground there. No offence was intended.
No albeit barren nor old bailey required here indeed hihihi Ditto what you said and a big hug to you :)
ExittheLemming,
I do kind of understand the meaning of both albeit and barren, thus in terms of our hypothesis we agree to disagree both of us are right, somehow to date I find the meaning what you said intriguing because I know that what I just described here is not quite right too I would love a topic about this because unlike you, my natural language is not English and those two words together fascinate me hugs

That's it! "albeit barren" is the new peace meaning, we might agree to disagree but found a common ground to agree and respect and hug each other lol

Damnit or rather blimey (in BBC pommy language ) Somehow I have not figured out how to reply to someone without the whole history the length of a newspaper article, even I get tired reading through all before I get to my new comment. This said, I lost interest to read further due to my long "LONG" repeat comments post, infact I even forgot what I wrote on the last post too much for me to read in order to end up finally to read my own comments, thus no idea what I last said too, I admit, my apologies for that and anything else maybe I have said which might have been perceived misconstrued, just in case too lol hugs xxx
