I like how this thread went from Yes to ELP to Genesis
How about PFM then?

No, I didn't even know there was a different version (studio, that is). I do like the live version on Genesis Live a bit better, but not nearly as much as Hackett's version. I even liked the version on Live at the rainbow more than the one on Genesis Live... but the CD copy of Raibow doesn't include that song, only the DVD audio mix includes the whole concert (I got the Live box set, and it seems they didn't want to repeat the songs from Live at the Rainbow that were already included on Genesis Live).

I stumbled across it on a Genesis compilation CD called Rock Theatre. Its only 3.44 minutes long but basically it dispenses with the long Mellotron intro so turns it into a more of an organ lead track. I think it must have been specially recorded as it includes a fade out that is not on the album so its not just an edit of the album track. What strikes me most about is the bass playing. Very nifty!

Get 'em Out By Friday has some incredible bass lines from Rutherford. Easily up there with Squire as far as complexity goes......

It's also on the Archive One box set. There's some nice guitar on the fade out, with Gabriel signing (I think) "on your own, your own".

The issue with the studio track is the mellotron's lack of every note being released in a short fade out, or recorded in a place with enough reverb. The overall sound is raw and played too fast. De Montfort Hall, Leicester (Genesis were a childlike hurricane there), on February 25, 1973, has it all fixed, if they ever fixed anything !!

I don't know. To shorten the track to under 4 min, and getting rid of the intro, which is the one part of the original song I actually liked, doesn't sound like a treatment of the song that I would enjoy. I guess I'll just stick with te Hackett / Wetton version that I already got to love.

I like a lot of Prog, but my tendencies run towards Psychedelic, Canterbury, Italian Prog and jazz fusion. So I've never gotten the appeal of Genesis, Yes, King Crimson. Having said that there are some really awesome songs by all three of those bands that I love.

I have a compilation album called 'Rock Theatre' - it has a photo of Gabriel in his Slipperman costume on the cover. The short Watcher is a novelty, and Mike's bass is thicker in sound and the fade-out works perfectly. Nothing on the original version though.

Thanks for that! I always thought that Rutherford was at least the equal to, if not superior to, Squire in that era.
Rutherford is a superior overall musician, being very competent on 6 string and 12 string guitars as well as bass guitar.

^^^ Was listening the other day to In The Cage and digging the funky basslines. Both great bassists, Rutherford and Squire, with very different styles that worked for their respective bands.

Roundabout is a very nice song giving the band's fundamental approach I think. I really like Steve Howe stuff. I don'T see any reason not to like them at all . . .

Well we can say I don't like YES for some reasons. But we can not say that they aren't good unless you don't know music.

Complete BS of course. They have written some objectionable material, but no prog fan should be without Close To The Edge or Relayer. 'Nuff said. |
I'm with you, Mirror Image. One can't pick two finer Yes albums with which to argue the band's merits. Good show!

^ I don't know. I think its still possible to like progressive rock and not like one of the main pillars of the genre. Pseudo spiritual lyrics being sung in a ridiculous high pitch is not everyone's cup of tea regardless of how good Steve Howe is.

I just can't see any fan of Symphonic Prog wouldn't like TFTO - it's part of the Pentateuch - which obviously is;
1. Nursery Cryme
2. Close to The Edge,
3. Tales from Topographic Oceans
4. Foxtrot
5. Selling England by the Pound
