I listen alot on Progressive Rock, but there is some bands that i can skip. I didn't like Yes at all cause they are too cheesy and too bad songs even on they're older material.
No feelings in their songs. Do you dislike Yes aswell?

Complete BS of course. They have written some objectionable material, but no prog fan should be without Close To The Edge or Relayer. 'Nuff said.

Honestly, there's a good bit of progressive rock I don't care for either: Gentle Giant, VdGG, Zappa, anything to do with Steve Hillage, Soft Machine, among others, but it didn't stop me from finding something that I enjoy within each of these bands' discography. Of course, Yes are a favorite of mine, but I don't care for everything they've done. When Genesis lost Hackett, they lost me, and so on. We can always harp on the negative, but it's better to find the positive and listen to what we enjoy.
All of this said, there's a lot of feeling in Yes' music. Just because you don't feel the music and the emotion it's trying to convey doesn't mean it's not there. You don't like their music, fine by me, but I'll always make time for them just like I'll always make time for Genesis, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, or Steve Hackett. There's not enough time on this earth to listen to music you don't feel anything from, so, again, listen to what you enjoy and don't get hung up on negative feelings.

I think I'd be booted from the site if I made a thread about every popular prog band that I don't enjoy.
 Just listen to what you like. No need to pick apart bands you that don't appeal to you or the people who enjoy them.

Between 1970 and 1972 Yes and Tull were the best things going around

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Rather ironic that this thread actually belongs in the prog appreciation part of the forum...
Seeing as you're still quite new here Rihanna, then I am willing to give it the benefit of a doubt, but please enlighten me: What do you hope to achieve in such a thread, other than willfully dismissing a band that a lot of people round these part hold dear? Strike that, I may have answered my question. Similar to joining Punk Archives and opening a thread called 'I don't like The Clash'... What I'm getting at is, that if this turns into people getting their panties in a twist, then I am locking it. Sure there's room for negative critique on this board too, but in the end it's all down to how you word it. Saying 'I don't like Yes' doesn't really say anything about why. For all we know, you could have listened to half of Union and based you opinion strictly on that. |

While I agree that "I don't like this or that"-threads aren't the most constructive or impressive I've possibly had a similar experience regarding Yes. I had come to love all the big UK-progbands (except ELP of course), plenty of Canterbury, fusion and italianprog, all Zeuhl & first generation RIO-bands + most Kraut/Kosmishe... really most things prog before I warmed up to any albums by the band in question.
I guess I had to mature to appreciate their lighter more "uplifting" approach or moods and atmosphere. And there was something about Jon Andersons voice that my ears grew tired listening to after a couple of minutes. To me it was much easier to connect with all the darker, melancholic, heavier, more difficult or weirder bands. That's probably related to how I, like many others were raised musically by the older kids in our schoolyard. Tough guys choosing "evil" or anti-establishment music that says hail satan, f**k society, kill everyone, destroy everyting and stuff like that. I certainly wasn't interested in any angelic voice singing about some spiritual mumbo jumbo, but a: Wicked little Scorpio, doomed to die a thousand times before he lives! ...was just perfect, and it still is. Coming back to Close to the Edge's titletrack after having learned to enjoy just about every other sound on the planet including (early) Penderecki, the jazz flute, Zarah Leander, Lollywood-OST's and The Monkees finally gave me the feel of a spiritual journey of an almost cathartic/cleansing dimension that's potentially within their music for everyone to discover. Actually its kinda similar to Magma (which I'm ashamed to admit also took me a couple of years to thoroughly enjoy). Edit: I did not write this Just for Fun.
