Black Sabbath (Ozzy years) were very progressive band in all aspects.

I suppose that's the inference, but the poll question is who is the better band, not who I like more; not the same thing at all. However I would understand this to mean technically.

Take concerts f'r instance, I've some good ROIOs by both and Procol are very tight and cohesive live while Sabbath (as Tony said in his book) made loads of mistakes but carried on regardless. They were actually very tight with RJD in the band and for the other line ups.

Both are very innovative in their roots to rock progression. I can draw a line from Bach to Procol, similarly so with  Stravinsky to Sabbath (harmonically).

I've much more Sabbath than Procol but both are crucial to rock collections - which is what these polls are really about.

Black Sabbath

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Obviously Black Sabbath are one of the most influential bands of the 20th century (probably just behind Beatles and Led Zep), but looking over how I'd rate their albums, and have many I have by them, Procol Harum win it for me. Shine On Brightly is one of the best albums ever made IMO, and all of them are incredibly listenable and upholding a bar. (Never got why Something Magic has such a long rating on PA as well - one of their best, beating Grand Hotel).

I've heard one album from each, Procol's debut and Paranoid. Both are solid eights in my mind, but I'll go with Sabbath

During the 80's I remember having listened many times to nice tracks of Black Sabbath, both from Ozzy's era - The Thrill Of It All, The Straightener (Studio Version), Under The Sun Every Day Comes and Goes, Snowblind, Children Of The Grave, War Pigs, as well as others I can't remeber now, and that few but intense years with Dio - Heaven and Hell, Children of The Sea, The Sign Of The Southern Cross, Die Young. And there is a song which doesn't have much of the genre but is quite interesting as well: Laguna Sunrise. Fluff has also a somewhat different atmosphere.

i know more songs by Sabbath (Ozzy era) than Procol Harum, so i chose the former; plus, i am getting into the band's music lately (little bits from Ozzy era).
