Today I bought my first Don Cherry record. I'd heard his unique trumpet playing on Robert Wyatt, Carla Bley, and other great musicians' albums, but this was the first time I took the plunge with a full LP with him as leader. It was an impulse buy, I saw a brand new LP copy (double) at a decent price, and it cried out to me to buy it. Very much a pan-ethnic affair, jazz is only a small part of the equation.

Don Cherry I don't know, but you probably know his son Eagle Eye Cherry for his one hit in the 90s, 'Save Tonight'. His daughter Neneh Cherry was a member of Rip Rig + Panic, a band that probably would appeal more to the members here, post-punk with jazz influence.

Just discovered Valentin Stip (or, at least, his upcoming album). Mesmerizing stuff and, while I haven't listened to all of it, I foresee it making my top 10 for this year. Check it out:

Just discovered SORNE. Best I can describe is a tribal/avant feel. Layers of vocals ontop of a sparse use of found and homemade instruments. Think I might go see them live tonight! EDIT: here's a vid too Edited by bloodnarfer - March 11 2014 at 10:25 |

I didn't discover this today, but it's my most prominent discovery recently: The Nonesuch Explorer Series. Lots of great authentic folk (or "world" if you insist) musics easily available (it's all on iTunes):
