My favorite Yes album. I actually loved the slow, languid forms.

Absolutely one of their best albums. I still haven't decided if it's their best album. Certainly it remains fixed into the mind and every listening is as if it were the first. Every time a new emotion.

Agreed. As a dedicated Yes fan going back to 1971, I tend to agree with Rick Wakeman that TFTO contained too much "filler" material. They were in the unfortunate position of having too much to fit on a single LP but not enough to fill two LPs. It would have taken an awkward 3 LP sides to do it in but it would have been probably the best music Yes ever created. Coming from me, that is high praise indeed. Grand ideas that did not work well due to the technical limitations of the time. I would love to see someone do it now on a single CD. If only......

Perhaps they could have done something like what Genesis did in the 80's with their album 3 sides live... only the other way around... 3 sides studio, and the 3rd side with a live song... perhaps one that didn't make it to Yessongs. |
That is kinda what I thought too. Or maybe a fourth side of "bonus tracks" like they do on CD reissues. Collected B sides and such. Oh, what might have been.....

Yes produced pretty good compositions from 1969-72 but they tried to get all fancy and drag out the songs to 20 minutes and weaken their songs. Tales was good but should have been better. I can see why wakeman left. Relayer has the same problem. Close to the edge shows this problem creeping in but Yes were more capable of filling an album with more good compositions then

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Shouldn't it be called "Tales from Over the Topographic Oceans"?

I completley agree with you as far as Tales go, but not so much about Relayer... or well, it depends on what you mean. Mainly, since you are saying you don't think extending their songs up to 20 min on Tales were, you are refering to "Gates of Delirium" on Relayer... and I wouldn't really take any minutes from it away. On the other hand, I don't really like "Sound Chaser", and I feel that "To be Over" is actually a bit over-long. I much prefer the instrumental 5 min versions Howe did later on. As for CttE, I wouldn't take any minute away from that album, from any of it's songs, it's just perfect the way it is.

Ha! I found something new! Well new for me at least, I had no idea that at a certain stage Jon Anderson left Yes band and Buggles musicians Geoff Downess and Trevor Horn joined Yes and produced an album before they became Asia! Ha! Honestly, I had no idea, I know, yes I am a nincompoop, nevertheless this is so exciting for me to discover this
To be honest I listened to that album now and don't understand why people don't like it, I think it's really good!
Unfortunately newcomers in a famous loved band always get slack from fans even if they do not deserve it
P.S. I must add that I dislike the track "Video Killed the Radio Star" to much!! Ugh! I could strangle someone listening to that.

I'm glad then that you are in Mozambique and I in Belgium, because I love the track plus both the Buggles albums PS Cyberstrangling doesn't exist yet, right

Good to hear another Buggles lover And the albums have a fabulous production too. Adventures in modern recording indeed. Not that it's proof, but both Buggles albums get a decent rating on Allmusic.com too (4 1/2 stars for The Age Of Plastic, 4 stars for Adventures In Modern Recording)

^ That's about how I'd rate them both. Never ever grimaced from the instant I heard them. They could be included here under Prog Related, coz they are !!

And then you will get the love that just keeps on giving from the mighty Tales.
A true classic and I feel I will do the same as you. Good call.
