There was a good relationship between Canned Heat and Mayall - Harvey Mandel was common to both? Mayall plays piano on a Canned Heat album

Not sure that last week's mix worked wrt to play the usual variety of musics heard on ALT2. This week back to the (ab)normal. Two contrasting tunes from David Sylvian (to make up for the omission) and Steve Wilson's live version of Liminol (since we had a faulty CD previously). The jazz section dips into world jazz fusion, while the Bob Mintzer tune is from a long deleted album, which has Jaco Pastorius supplying some of the basswork. And would you believe Keith Jarrett's is actually guitar-lead and played by Jarrett. Humblepie's Fillmore album got an enthusiastic review in Classic Rock recently, suggesting this was a major influence on ACDC. Then samples from a couple of remastered albums by Krimson and The Who.  Normal service resumed?

Attempted to produce a very varied music show for Thursday night, although the only new recording sampled, is by  the Flower Kings. With BBC 4 halfway between 2 documentaries on American blues, (hey their trailer shows all of 2 seconds of Mike Bloomfield in action), some Brazilian blues from Blues Etilicos, plus Janis Joplin and Capt. Beefheart's variants.  Jazz funk features fairly heavily in the jazz section of the show. And the show finishes with 10 minutes of Steve Wilson's delightful remixing/remastering of Yes.

Happy New Year!!! Glad somebody reminded me that UG term started a week earlier than usual, i.e. this week, also glad back on the air this Thursday after a 3 week break. Had time to dig around and find some new and old obscurities that are worth a listen, perhaps even purchase. New jazz from trombonist Roswell Rudd (with friend Gary Lucas guesting) and retro swinger Mad Manoush. New prog from Canadians Blood Ceremony. Interesting fusion of chamber music with Lennon and McCartney from Cuban composer Leo Brouwer. Early jazz rockers Formerly Anthrax suggested during a Facebook discussion. As for Heavy Balloon....... As ever the usual eclectic mix:

Back on the ball wrt pulling music together for the next ALT2 - all sorted on Sunday before the Thursday. Continuing to plunder the archives for obscurities, although a number of very delayed remasters on CD have appeared in the last 12 months - and feature here. Allman Brothers alas minus Duane, live and found in the deluxe issue of 'Brothers & Sisters'. Catching up (Paul) Butterfield's Blues Band - seemingly ignored in BBC4's documentary of American Rock last Friday, when some pundits elsewhere have suggested rock was born when Butterfield and others joined Bob Dylan for the Newport Folk Festival '64 or '65. Interesting prog from Airbag and Discipline - when so much of new prog is desperately dull, even with virtuoso playing. Some post- psychedelia from American Dream and Heavy Balloon - yes that how they spell 'Led Zeppelin'. And then many other strange delights:

New jazz releases are filtering through - does new jazz get released in the Christmas weeks? - of which just Hackney Colliery Band is the first (coming: Brad Mehldau goes electric , plus a new and reissued Jonas Hellborg albums planned for February). Remastered Brian Auger, Tempest (with Ollie Hassall), Frank Zappa, David Sylvian. New prog - thanks to Unicorn in Canada - from Huis. Then something that is reviewed elsewhere as 'experimental rock/post punk' (a contradiction in terms surely) by Xiu Xiu (look out for my annoucing of that name......). Then one of those tracks I love to find, Warren Zevon/REM/Neil Young altogether. And it appears David Sylvian continues to be our Artist Of The Term (or 2).

Another 2 hours of largely unusual but interesting and entertaining music awaits you. At last decided on "artist of the term" and gone for Allan Holdsworth. Featuring some tunes by artists who have been friends of the show, including Hugh Hopper, Scott McGill, Kim Sajn (coincidentally this evening received a special from Kim living out in Washington state), and Gary Lucas (note: a London gig with Peter Hammill in February). Then a couple of tunes of Arabic music  fused with rock by Duode (lovely pun  - a duo who play ouds - getit?) and the late diva of  the Rai genre, Rimitti. Then my two favourite Swedish (in fact nationality is irrelevant) drum & keyboard duos: Mats-Morgan and the Johansson Bros. Anybody else heard  the new Transatlantic album, with Neil Morse stating the band are aiming for the standard of 'Close To The Edge'? Alas the 2nd disc of rock covers has me responding: why bother? Nevertheless we sample their take on King Crimson:

Some new jazz has come my way. Having pre-ordered the CD of Brad Mehldau's (with Mark Guiliano) excursion in electronic keyboard, released the end of this month, Amazon have already released the album as MP3s  for CD pre-purchasers - hence the chance to preview. Jazzwise, recently adding to the praise heaped on Manchester-based GoGO Penguin, I had to get a copy of their album. As promised Cuneiform have come up trumps, with Belgium RIO band Present in the form of a couple of remastered/extended albums plus an interesting double from Ed Palermo. As stated last week Allan Holdsworth is artist of the term: this week I've gone to an album very close to my heart and my Scotch whisky cabinet - with rumours of a remaster being released soon.  Then there is a wild mix.

In passing: anybody follow the recent BBC 4 documentary series on American rock  - as expected a rather narrow and obvious set of viewpoints but it had its moments - but I'm still amused/bemused that the theme/trailer music used, was written and originally recorded a middle class English band - who?  Enjoy and don't just lurk there during the broadcast - talk to me.

For the eve of St Valentines Day, I've not gone out of my way to be obviously romantic - and if it happens it is more luck than otherwise. Got the new Lucas/Hammill album at last - after the critics and the record company writing that this album is different for both artists, I have beg to differ. This is what I expected from the musicians wrt their separate inputs, but there is a distinct synergism when the two are playing together, thus making this a superior piece of music for 2014. Dipping further in Brad Mehldau/Mark Guiliano's and GoGo Penguin's recent offerings, plus the new Metheny. Maynard James Keenan comes up twice with Tool side projects. Something from Steve Hackett's treble set (but could have fitted onto a double) 'Live at Hammersmith' - how much more can be teased out under the title 'Genesis Revisited'? And least we forget The Mars Volta - have they really been around for  a decade? In passing, tonight the two new Hellberg albums were waiting for me in today's post. Trio-played, 'Jazz Raj'  is really new (with a DJ challenge: the two tracks are each 31 minutes long), while the Hellberg solo,  'Silent Life 1990' is remastered back catalogue with a couple of extra tracks - definitely something for the show on the 20th.

Samples from the new Hellborg albums - continues to confirm my thought that he is the best acoustic bass guitar player. Jazz/soul in the forms of Anthony Joseph and Gregory Porter. In a recent edition Classic Rock excelled themselves with an article on Mike Bloomfield, so let's illustrate that piece with a couple of samples. More from Lucas/Hammill's "Other World" album - don't forget appearing at London's Union Chapel  next Friday (21st). Talking Hammill; a recent article in the LondonTimes listed the lyrics of VdGG's "Refugees" in an all time Top 20........ an excuse to play the tune again...... Finally, I continue my lambast at reviewers who appear to have little idea of rock genres with Cynic, listed elsewhere both as 'jazz fusion' and 'post metal rock' - I beg to differ, but seemingly one of those better recent rock bands...
