Topic: King Crimson vs. Rush - 1970's Posted: March 26 2018 at 23:24 |

I love Rush seventies albums, but in the eighties not listen much their after Signals-albums, I have Power Windows and Presto and listen them maybe one time in five years. Really liked Power Windows much more than Grace Under Pressure when those came. Never liked Hold Your Fire. The title song with that awful video of "Roll the Bones"... I am much more Crimson seventies album lover, but really think they do lot better after seventies than Rush. |
PA would disagree

I still listen to King Crimson. I don't listen to Rush.

Since the poll question says who do I prefer, the answer is Rush.

Permanent Waves was released on January 14, 1980. It was written completely in the 70s so it could have been included in this poll. Not sure that would have change the results all that much though.
I'm a huge Rush fan and am only now really exploring KC. I didn't vote, although KC could never mean as much to me as Rush does.

Without the debut from King Crimson - Rush win out for me. It's down to LTIA, Starless and Bible Black and the glorious Red against 2112, Farewell to Kings and Hemispheres. Those last two swing it for me.

I simply adore their stuff from 2112- Hemispheres (which they managed to surpass with their next 2 releases - IMHO)
Crimson - I will never understand their popularity. They are clearly loved by most of the prog community - I just don't know why - I've tried listening to different KC albums but finally just gave up.

Rush by a mile. More talented musicians + better songs.

You called? That's King Crimson for you though. They were the hardest band for me to get into in the prog world.

Brilliantly innovative and never content to rest on their laurels. You should listen to their live material. |
When I say I don't get KC it is with no sense of joy. I feel like I am missing out on something but I can't force myself to like something that I don't enjoy. However, I understand what you mean when you talk about them being a band always trying to move forward. But they are just not for me.
Still, I love some frowned upon albums like: Topographic Oceans, A Passion Play, Platinum & Breathless - it keeps things interesting when we like different things!
