I still, and always will, recommend the most criminally underrated band from prog's golden era: Strawbs. Perhaps it's the folk leaning but it's an absolute disgrace that they aren't more well known or widely listened. They Legends of the genre and should be recognized as such.

VAKO is a project formed by a musician with a long trajectory of musical experience.
This first disk presented by VAKO contains seven pieces, each pieces reflects influences throughout his musical career. In this first disc made by VAKO ,you can hear these influences of groups like Pink Floyd , King Crimson,Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra tempel, Cluster, Brian Eno, Heldon,Ashra,Triana in general, bands with Progressive Electronic , Berlin old School, Krautrock , Experimental , Ambient and acoustic guitars, to each of these influences a personal touch is added by VAKO from his compositions. I hope that you enjoy my music as I have enjoyed composing!!!! I hope can see your feedback with my new project!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjrGNVp6c9g |

Hello, I'm new here and what not. I'm a huge prog nerd. If anyone's really curious as to what's happening with great Prog these days, check out the latest back-to-back releases by the Circus Devils with the mind-bending "When Machines Attack" and the ground-breaking "My Mind Has Seen The White Trick". If you're new to the Devils, congratulations, there's still 10 more albums to dig through including a soundtrack. I can't recommend these enough to anyone who likes darker Psychedelic Prog mixed with some heaviness and experimentation. Albums of the year, hands down. |

Today I am gonna recommend the incredible GERMAN PROG METAL outfit that is, VANDEN PLAS.
They are not widely talked about nor have they gotten the attention they deserve around here in, Prog land so I am gonna recommend them tenfold! Their last to efforts CHRIST 0 and SERAPHIC CLOCKWORK are the best and most advanced works to date. You won't hurt yourself starting with both of those albums first. VANDEN PLAS have really found their sound and since 2006 they've really have boomed into one powerhouse of a Prog metal band. Fans of the genre can't go wrong with VP. Enjoy guys. ;) |

Nik Turner's Space Gypsy is one of the best, if not the best Hawkwind release since Warrior at the Edge of Time.

I am currently digging:
Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz! Please drop me a message with album suggestions. |

Can anyone recommend me some recent prog to get me interested in it again? I mean I checked out the top albums of 2013 on this site and I listened to some of the Haken LP and honestly, aside from some riffs and and vocal work it just got tedious, they're so self-consciously a prog band that what they're doing is just a by the book kind of music. Are there any bands that aren't so tied in with the genre but still make interesting/different music? Don't think I've encountered any modern stuff I really enjoy yet.
Edit: I do enjoy Consider the Source, but I'm talking more about stuff wi vocals. Edited by steve2603 - January 05 2014 at 17:13 |

Have you checked out Riverside or Discipline at all? Those are two groups that write from the heart as much as from the head. If you can stomach the heavier stuff, I'm a regular advocate for Opeth too. |
