It seems we have an artist of the term and by default: David Sylvain, who's voice has appeared on every show so far - but not necessarily under his own name: this week he guests with Nine Horses. Heavy choices restrictedto France's excellent Morglbl and the US's superior (IMHO) metallists, Tool. New jazz discoveries in the forms of the Netherland's Ploctones (interesting name), and the Indo-jazz of Smith, Brooks, Prasanna. A sample from the newie by Exivious - musically skirting rock and jazz but not really settling. Then a couple of combos: Chicago/Beach Boy and Govt Mule/Grace Potter. A version of LZ's 'Dazed & Confused' recorded some time before, LZ's here by the Yardbirds (commonality: Mr Page - hey he even borrowed from himself.....). Finally (and no apologies having played the studio version a couple of weeks ago), Steven Wilson et al  very superior prog in the form of 'Liminol' - live in Mexico City. Ex Miles Davis sidesman, Adam Holzman shines on Fender Rhodes, I guess resurrecting the ring modulator at one point. Feedback during the show is as ever welcome.

I seemed to be in the middle of a brass rock thing at the moment, especially discovering bands from the late 60's/early 70's that had passed me by, back them. There was a temptation to do an ALT2 purely brass rock - but avoided that as the show does have a degree of variety. However, every tune played this Thursday will involved brass or woodwind to a greater of lesser extent, shifting back to 1944 for the earliest recording.  (In passing, having moaned that the term "prog" is excessively over-used and often wrongly, "brass rock" seems to get slapped onto recordings that might have a solitary flute or sax break somewhere through 40 minutes of album or the other extreme, having long sax jazz solos. Taking my reference from early Chicago or BST, this is rock which includes a substantial amount of brass or woodwind lead instrumental breaks, which tend more to rock or soul than jazz - but not banned - AND there are more than one brass and/or woodwind player in the band. Bitching over.)
