This artist (from Berkeley, CA, USA) was dropped into Prog Electronic's back yard by a colleague on here well over a year ago now, and whilst it was decided at the time that the music didn't fit the very precise definition of that particular sub, both Eclectic and Crossover were mentioned in the discussion which followed. I have very recently been given a link to some music, which I found very interesting indeed, and I feel that it is worth re-opening the debate out here in the open, where more people have the chance to comment, and just maybe we can find a home for this fellow. Tongue

There is not a great deal of information about Eric himself on his official website: http://soundsliketree.com/, it being mainly a blog about the music he creates.
Similarly his facebook: https://www.facebook.com/eomusic and reverbnation: http://www.reverbnation.com/eomusic pages do not give much away. The most info I found about him from a brief search came from the website of contemporary circus/dance company Sweet Can Productions: http://www.sweetcanproductions.com/, for whom Eric writes and performs the music which accompanies their shows as one of his various projects:

Eric "EO" Oberthaler received a B.M. from Oberlin Conservatory ('93) and an M.F.A. from the California Institute of the Arts ('96), where he studied composition with Mel Powell and Stephen Mosko, trumpet and improvisation with Wadada Leo Smith, and classical Indian music with sarod master Rajeev Taranath. Equally at home with digital audio production and traditional composition, EO has produced a diverse body of work that includes the music for Yes Sweet Can!, Flowering Anomalies (recently premiered at TED2009), Chorus of Dreams and Inside Out (two feature-length stage shows created for UV-light dance-theater company ArcheDream for Humankind), three large-scale operatic rituals for the Burning Man festival (1999, 2000, 2002) involving hundreds of performers, the techno-rock opera Joe Messiah, and dozens of songs and new works for Gamelan X, including their recent CD release, SATU.

EO's chamber orchestra compositions have been performed by the Atlantic Brass Quintet, the CalArts New Century Players, Indiana University New Music Ensemble, and the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble. A naturally dynamic performer, E O specializes in trumpet, keyboards, and voice. He is a featured trumpeter with Brass Menazeri, the Bay Area's premier balkan brass band, and has appeared on numerous recordings including the Residents' Animal Lover and Joanna Newsom's recent release, Have One On Me.

He is also a highly skilled artist (painter), creating the artwork not only for his own albums, but also for the debut release 'Embyrs' by his friend and collaborator Kyrstyn Pixton: http://kyrstynsong.com/. (Beautiful, abstract, trip hop/dream pop/electronic music, and exquisite vocals, but you won't find any prog rock here)

As for his own music it can be freely streamed either on his own website: http://soundsliketree.com/, on bandcamp: http://eomusic.bandcamp.com/, or on soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/#soundsliketree.

Other links of interest are:

https://www.facebook.com/eomusic
http://www.youtube.com/user/eosounds, from where the following tubes from his two main releases ('Nest Of Wishes (vol. 1)' from earlier this year, and 'River Through An Open Door' from Aug 2011 are taken:

There is much use of electronics in this music as previously stated, and ethnic influences abound, but since PE don't feel it is quite right for their sub, and I'm pretty sure it can be generally classed as prog, I throw it open to the floor for debate... Tongue

Not rock - electronic / orchestrated ambient new-agey dance music. Sorry, but I don't really see where else this could fit here if not PE.

Not to worry. Since the other two subs were hinted upon in the original PE eval, I thought it might be worth throwing it out here for a further (and final) check. Thumbs Up
