I'm disappointed. Back in the early days this topic would have been closed by page 3.

That is the most insincere and shallow appology I have ever seen. Please find yourself subject to a free one month suspension of your account while you reconsider your behaviour and conduct here. |

I like this "free suspension" thing. It's like a sales promotion: "Submit three insulting remarks and get a free ban for a month".

Well, since the OP has been banned, I'm not sure if this is worth posting but............................. I couldn't help but notice that ALL Genesis albums are listed as "pop/rock", under "genre" in allmusic, making this list of links basically useless. Allmusic, however, also lists "styles" under genre, which is more specific for each album. I think a system like that has been suggested here more than once, but would be a lot of work to set up initially and make take away from the focus of the site, which is obviously progressive rock. |

You know though, not to turn this into yet another Genesis discussion, but in some ways Genesis has always been a pop band. In fact, I do remember one of the members (Peter maybe) said that very same thing. It's just in 1972, 22-minute, multi-part songs were popular. So one could say that Genesis was always a pop band and they didn't really change, just the definition of pop music changed.

Genesis at it's most commercially sucessful would still throw the occasional bone to the old prog fans. I'll never forgive them for Misunderstanding, though. (it really was some kind of mistake) But hey, before I got into their old prog stuff I was enjoying Follow You, Follow Me on the radio. I do love the much maligned Who Dunnit? The band at its silliest best.

I never cared for Genesis at all until I heard the Gabriel stuff. Oddly enough, it was getting in to that stuff that caused me to have a more balanced view of their later, pop material. I still don't care for it for the most part (with Home By The Sea, Domino, and a couple others of that ilk being exceptions), but can at least appreciate that they were pretty much a pop based band from the beginning (the melodies were what made them great, whether in pop context or prog context).

Hey peeps. I kind of lost my old password and my email address has changed. The old one I have no access to - so I'm an old newbie . Having read back I see that the originator of this thread was kind of argumentative but was the only option to ban him for a month? I see a potential language barrier problem, not necessarily an over the top, argumentative person, who could perhaps have been spoken to via private messaging as I was by Rushfan many many moons ago when I took umbrage to some thing, namely the non inclusion of Stratovarius here on Progarchives in any form. Anyways, it's good to be able to post again and maybe a fresh start will revitalise me regarding the forums and the album reviews.

Regardless of OP's insincere and shallow behaviour, he's let me know Steven Wilson, an unknown artist for me. No doubt about it.

I remember years ago in an interview posted on this very website, Swilson stated that he didn't care for the prog label and that he made what he called "porcupine tree music".

Yes, that was about 8 years ago now. He has since apologized for his comments about other bands being "regressive" and has said that he has come around to being comfortable with the "prog" label and wanting to make prog music. I think he is just the guy that so-called "real" proggers love to hate. He does come off as rather arrogant at times, but he's made his own success (more than just about any contemporary band on this site) and his popularity at least entitles him to feel that he's doing something right, don't you think? |

No thats right its not Its now the 29th greatest album of all time according to the list. Of course it depends on how many people decide to review it. i had no probs giving it 5 stars as its incredible music and nothing jumps out as filler to my ears, and indeed occasionally its genius musicianship.

Of course he is.
What is funny is when Anglagard releases an album that totally sounds right out of the 70s, people fall to their knees and instantly call it progressive, but when Wilson does an album with strong 70s influences, but enough modern touches to make it sound modern, the question of "Is it really prog?" inexplicably gets asked. It's almost like some get pissed at Wilson for incorporating elements they do not like into their prog (alt rock, trip hop, etc.) and would rather praise bands that sound like the 70s and bring nothing new to the table. |
