You probably didn't read the poll question well and hence couldn't understand. They simply voted for the band they prefer. One doesn't HAVE to prefer the more important band only. I take LZ to be a far more significant band than Alice in Chains but I certainly prefer the latter, eight days a week.

Love both Bands, But I'm going with Rush. The Beatles are cool but they never put out an epic like "2112".
"A Day in the Life" is one of the best Proto-Progs IMHO though. ( And one of the last major ones.)

But IMHO nothing after SPLHCB has anything to do with Proto-Prog.

And in America I think Prog started when The Mothers of Invention released Absolutely Free.

Maybe we should all just take Paul McCartney’s advice who when questioned about its relevance has been known to have commented, “It’s a great double album, it sold, it’s the bloody Beatles White Album, shut up!”
“The Beatles” or as it’s more commoney known the ‘White Album”, is considered by many, including John Lennon himself, as the album that saw the Beatles reach their peak as songwriters. This album was very diverse in terms of music genres, it stood the test of time, to date I continue to listen and enjoy the album. It might not be as innovative as Sgt. Pepper or Revolver however Helder Skelter was certainly progressive at the time considering that no band/musician ever had recorded anything even similar. Also some of the track titles are so silly and fun, this is prog too

Pop bands will always get more votes than any progressive rock band, this has been proven many times. Not so much on this site but in general and on other music sites. I am not surprised Beatles have more votes than Rush, but I am more surpised they have not tripled the Rush votes. I am not a Beatles fan, never have been. All I see when I hear one of their songs is 1000's of screaming teenage girls, but that is not the main reason for my dislike. I don't like their singing or music playing, The Who easily blow the fab four off any stage any day, The Beatles are not known for any chops. You will never find 1000's of teenage girls screaming and pulling their hair out to Rush's Working Man or Limelight.
Madonna and Lady Gaga are more prog than the Beatles, but neither are progressive rock, all three are pop music artists. But I do see how easy it is for people to try and include Beatles into one of the many prog subgenres, and that is fine.
They are a pop band and will always win these type of polls....Its just a poll by the way.

Neither will you find 1000's of teenage girls screaming and pulling their hair out to most of the stuff the Beatles did after '65. The Beatles are a pop band for sure, but they're the number one argument in favor of pop as a legitimate art form. Rush, on the other hand, are the number one argument in favor of keeping science fiction and Greek mythology away from drummers with a vivid imagination. (Just kidding, I like Rush.) Plus, it's not true that pop artists always win the polls. If you made a poll with Rush against, say, the Hollies, I'm sure Rush would win, and not just on PA. And if the Rolling Stone had a poll with Rush against Lady Gaga, I'm sure Rush would win. |

It goes like this.... Rush are ultra progressive when pitted with say Beatles and accessible, unpretentious and non elitist when pitted with say Magma. Heads I win, tails you lose. Love the familiar and convenient implication, by the way, that if thousands of teenage girls like something, it's got to be bad. By the way, I can hardly think of any Rush composition as progressive as Day in a life (or Rolling Stones' 2000 light years from Home for that matte). Ambition, in terms of writing sprawling epics, technicality and progressiveness are all entirely different things and existence of one quality doesn't imply the others. |
