The Beatles were probably the most versatile, innovative and influential band of all time. Like him or not, Sir Paul is one of the most talented and prolific composers on this planet, period. Between Paul and John they also generated an impressive collection of outstanding lyrics.  Rush is an accomplished and much-beloved band with a long and dignified career, but frankly I don't think they are quite in the same category as The Fab Four.

I agree with you Argonaut, the Beatles were groundbreaking and at the forefront of everything, I go even as far as saying that they might even have invented metal with Helter Skelter.

A hug to you, Hug

Not so sure about "Helter Skelter"... it may be a bit crazy, heavy even, but it doesn't sound so much "Heavy Metal" to me... however, "She's so Heavy", yeah, that one almost sounds like metal to me.

Awww listen and open your mind Wink Hug

Yeah, I love that song. And indeed it is heavy. But even though it's not so fast, those slow gloomy heavy guitars on "She's so Heavy" sound more metal to me, the ones on the "she's so heavy" parts of the song (of course the part of the song with the lyrics "I Want you" are not metal at all).

yeah Helter Skelter may have been a new step in just the raw energy and speed in rock music and certainly heavy for it's time but I agree that it doesn't necessarily have the metal edge, rather i would put it closer to proto-punk like the stooges or something.

However, they are two different bands and anyone who has heard them can express an opinion as to which one he prefers. They don't have to be very similar in order for you to have a favourite.

Hi Hacketfan Hug
I have to disagree with you. The beatles were the first in mixed time signatures, i.e. "She said" reaches 8/5. Their influences of psychedelic style inc. indian instrumentation also with sitar, etc, inc. electronica especially in "Tomorrow never Knows" and "Strawberry Fields Forever" was new thus not recorded by any other band at the time. Also "A day in life" is prog unless you can explain to me why it's not.
Even YES were very influenced by the Beatles, i.e. Jon Anderson said that YES were influenced by the beatles especially Sgt. Pepper and Magical Tour albums, that they have been a big influence on their music, especially early yes. YES even recorded a beatles cover called "Every Little thing" on their debut album.

You are right. They are not a prog band. They are a proto-prog band. Smile

Where's the King Crimson X Cash poll? I'm eager to pay my tribute to the late Man in Black.
Bach, Ma, Bros, Déia, Dante.

Well, The Beatles are still winning, so that should be good enough. I would guess that in a prog site Rush might get a bit of a hand to get a few more votes. I think they are both good, but indeed I may give the edge to The Beatles. Now, just out of curiosity, which do you prefer, The Beatles or Pink Floyd? (as a matter of fact, I believe there's a poll about that too).

As I've tried to say already, it's impossible to judge The Beatles against anyone, because of the historical significance. It's not like for like.
