I agree with you Argonaut, the Beatles were groundbreaking and at the forefront of everything, I go even as far as saying that they might even have invented metal with Helter Skelter.

A hug to you, Hug

Not so sure about "Helter Skelter"... it may be a bit crazy, heavy even, but it doesn't sound so much "Heavy Metal" to me... however, "She's so Heavy", yeah, that one almost sounds like metal to me.

Can't agree there bud. Don't understand it :\

yeah I've often said that She's So Heavy might be the first real instance of "proto-doom", If you just kicked up the distortion on the guitars and made the drums heavier that main riff could easily be a Candlemass song.

I want you or She's so heavy is blues rock to me, I'd rather call Why don't we do it on the road (lol you gotta love Paul McCartney Embarrassed) more metal although heavily blues rock too. Smile

Besides the upbeat tunes, this track ( She so heavy) has also influence in terms of tunes from Because.

Do I have to choose just one? Cry

Okay, I'll pick the Beatles. Slightly more consistent output and varied evolution.

Not that Rush didn't have a varied evolution - listen to Fly By Night, Hemispheres and Signals back to back and it's hard to believe it's the same band...well, at least it would be if Geddy Lee's singing wasn't such a dead giveaway. LOL

'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' is in my top 5 of Beatles' tunes.  Definately heavy, McCartney just smokes it on the bass, the vocals are as far removed from 'Can't Buy Me Love' as possible, and it's quite epic, especially with the killer riff during the 2nd half.  The jazzy middle section with the Hammond just blows.  Great track, and better than many Rush tunes, but the intense complexity of much of Rush's music wins me over.....

I find it odd how can one compare a 3 member band to especially The Beatles but ok tastes and one's perception differ and this is ok too.

Sorry, but a diversion from the thread here..... - I am just listening to 'Revolver' right now, and I have to say that 'Taxman' is an AMAZING tune - as good as, say, YYZ (by Rush) for me Big smile.  Yeah, a vocal track compared to an instrumental, but the overall effect is the same............(blame it on the drugs...Confused).............

I've called Rush "just a nice little hard rock band", and not understood what's so great about them, in the past, but after listening to them a lot recently I've developed a new appreciaton for them, and they're steadily climbing my list of favourite bands. Still, I've got to go with The Beatles here. Not many bands can compare with them in terms of innovation, influencing other bands and simply creating great music.
