Ok, so Sounds that Can't be Made is the best thing they've done since Marbles . . . Ok, you've convinced me, I should probably pick this one up, no?

*blink and blush* well shoot, that was unexpected.  I almost feel like I should get rid of the post to give the honor to one of the regulars here . . . Embarrassed

Steve, I'm immersing myself in Neo-prog here, I'm totally excited about the promotion so I figure I really need to reacquaint myself with Marillion.  There are a few of their CD's that I'm pretty familiar with, but there are a bunch that I've missed, the last three or so spring to mind.

Yes Tom, definitely get the new one, it really is excellent and one of my favourite albums of the year.

The previous album Happiness Is The Road I also like a lot (I tend to like double albums a lot, something about being a proggie I guess).  It's not all great, there are a few weak songs, but the highlights are truly fabulous.  I'm thinking especially the title track, This Train Is My Life, The Man From The Planet Marzipan and Real Tears For Sale.  Those four songs would grace any Marillion album.

Somewhere Else is a fine album too, but somehow just doesn't seem to quite have the same feel as other recent albums, perhaps due to the fact it wasn't self-released.  It's well worth getting, though I don't think it's generally that popular with the hardcore fans (am I right?).  It features my number 3 favourite Marillion track of all, The Wound, what an incredible piece of music that is.

Am I the only one who likes STCBM more than Marbles; but thinks that neither is an all time classic?

Marillion released an album called "Best Live" a short time ago (2 CD live compilation). Burning Shed just announced that it will be available as a 4 LP set with booklet in late January. Smile

Somewhere Else is one of those "controversial" albums amongst the hardcore fan base. It is full of really good stuff, and is extremely emotional, given that much of it concentrates on Hogarth's separation. It ultimately suffers from being the successor album to Marbles, which was so damned good that anything would have paled in comparison really.

HITR is a fine double album, and features some utter classics. Real Tears For Sale comes to mind immediately.

I have already given my thoughts about STCBM. It is excellent, and deserves all the plaudits received.

All three of these albums do have one thing in common, and shared with most of the band's works. That is, they need to be listened too more than a few times to get the ultimate appreciation. They are not "easy listening" albums, but deep, complex, emotional, and the progression of a band that continue to strive to reach new heights and new sounds.

Am I on dope, or did Marillion's new album totally miss their top 100? Um, seriously?

Whatever, PA.

You are correct, good sir. An overall rating of 3.74 actually isn't bad at all, but low enough to keep it out of the top 100.

Actually, PA and I agree that the best album of the year was the new Big Big Train; however, thought the new Marillion should be there somewhere.

I actually got Sounds That Can't Be Made for Christmas, I've only listened to it once, but I already knew the songs Power and The Sky Above The Rain.

The BBT album is up there. My personal favourites of the year are Sylvan's and IO Earth, with STCBM a very, very close third.

There is, I am afraid, an inherent bias on this site against Hogarth era Marillion, and it is one of the worst aspects of the site. If only people would just sit down, give it a listen, and appreciate it for what it is, that is an incredible band stretching all of the progressive boundaries.

I can see the replies now. "It's not Fish, though". BaaaahAngry

It is also not Magma, Opeth or Kayo Dot, and fans of those bands make up an unordinarily large portion of PA and tend to hate anything Neo.

Speaking of Neo - I'm starting to enjoy IQ.

But pertaining to Marillion, i haven't found anything that has kept my attention past Script.
How predictable?

PS: Kayo Dot is an awesome band. Tongue

One of the reasons why I'm sticking closer to either Facebook or Progressive Ears and have slowly drifted from PA. You have a pretty 50/50 split between the Fish and Hogarth fans over there.

Funny how I jumped ship after Afraid Of Sunlight.  I lost touch with them until...............seeing some of their later 90's albums released on vinyl recently.  I reluctantly selected Marillion.com and This Strange Engine and was pleasantly surprised.  Naturally the longer cuts impressed me the most, but some of the poppier material isn't bad at all.  Starting to get into them again.

hey marillion fans,

i've been trying to get into these dudes.  can someone tell me why you personally like them?  what makes them special?  i really like pete because of transatlantic...however, he seems sorely underused in marillion.  just an opinion.  so what is it about these dudes that makes even women gush over them?   :)

[QUOTE=zumacraig]hey marillion fans,

Well, for a start, Pete is not sorely underused. In fact, he is very much at the heart and soul of a brilliant ensemble. The band are the sum of the individual parts, end of.

I think the reason I love them so much is their willingness to push the boundaries, constantly. It would have been the easiest thing in the world, for example, to have replaced Fish with a soundalike, and carry on in the same vein. In Hogarth, they got an artist who was utterly different, and, IMHO, better.

They are a truly progressive band, in the best sense of the word. Never content to rest on their laurels, they consistently move on, and, to boot, they have produced some of the most emotional and moving music ever. I defy anyone not to be moved by Brave, Marbles, or the latest, Sounds that can't be Made.

yeah, i guess i meant /more active/ rather than underused.  it's just two different kinds of music and pete amazing in his ability to play all that crazy fast stuff in TA and the more intricate subtle stuff in Marillion.

i do think they push the boundaries, but their music is pretty slow and really requires time and attention.  i've never had a visceral reaction to them in the same why i want to fist pump when i hear 'yours is no disgrace'.  anyway, i've spent a little bit of time with marbles, brave and script.  i think i need to just bite the bullet and buy one of those and just listen to it intentionally.  incidentally, i love IQ.  they blew me away on first listen.  i'm slowly getting most of their albums.

anyway, i'd love to hear others opinions on how/why they love marillion.

peace, and may the elves rest well in the gray havens.
