Yep, it's a good album (especially the drumming from the unerring Mr Giles of course) but do you really think the 'roomier' areas of Moonchild are breathtaking? (or would wheezy/bronchial be more accurate?Wink)

You know, I have never minded the last bit of Moonhild particularly. I thought it was a nice cooldown period ffeore the climax. However, on this particular listen, I realized that it is actually genius. I knew it would happen sooner or later.

The relationship between a single original prog record (that obviously combines elements of classical music, jazz, folk, and psych-rock) and the whole of prog genre is no analogy to the relationship between two distant genres like jazz and rock-n'-roll. Plus, I really don't remember the band jamming out on the title track or jamming throughout "I Talk to the Wind".

Then you'll have to check the progressive rock definitions. That might help you understand.

What this post illustrates yet again is that our music is such a personal and powerful force within us that we are completely hopeless and ill-qualified to judge what is good and bad. We only quantify each piece against our own personal prejudice. It's all purely personal taste and nothing at all to do with quality. We are all musical idiots.

Mike Portnoy is, in my opinion, the closest to the "factually" greatest drummer of all time. He shows the right balance of technique, emotion, and humor in his drumming and music-making. Really smart guy too.

Sad thing is he's a complete and total jerk.

Him or Gavin I would agree with.

I agree with everything you just said, but it's just too bad his OCD/control freak attitude gets the better of him ultimately leading to real poor decision to leave DREAM THEATER. Not so smart there, but because of his strong personality it's actually been better for Dream Theater anyway. A Dramatic Turn of events indeed was a solid album and the best effort since 6 degrees. I just hope that Mike Portnoy gets affiliated with something I like cause Adrenaline Mob is not working for me.

I haven't heard Mangini, but I have heard Portnoy a number of times.  I must admit that Portnoy's drumming is quite amazing, his timing immaculate.  Its a shame he left DT, but I guess he is now free to put his trademark on lots of albums.

Who is the best? - I don't know I am not qualified to say.

I don't think playing with DT was limiting his freedom of playing with other bands. Take Transatlantic of Neal Morse's solo, for example.

BTW, Portnoy is doing a tour with Sheenan, McAlpine and Sherinian right now. Is someone going to this?

Marco Minnemann is the best drummer ever for me. He's a nice guy, and apparently he likes to drink lots of beer (at least when he played in my town with Steven Wilson I noticed that, Tongue). Plus he wore a Cookie Monster t shirt to the DT audition. It was a good thing that they took Mangini. Minnemann is too cool for DT...
