Me: "In the Cage". Not a favorite of mine, but I think that as the time goes by while not listening to it and then getting back to it, I understand more of the musical stuff in it. Still, I hate the use of the synths. There is a video on YouTube where a dude does a Banks solo on his acoustic guitar, and that is classy.

"Locomotive Breath". Oh, what a song. I was even trying to squeeze out a few decent guitar licks after every single one of Ian's flute licks during his solo. I may still have "Critique Oblique" in my head, but the former is still my favorite today.

M-m ... but Liebezeit and Schmidt were amazing in that one.
Me: it's a new day here in Reno, and right off the bat, without any consideration of a possible defeat, this is my "song" (a composition, really) of the day:

Indeed, but its Its complex, virtuoso, jazzy and almost show-offy approach is so different to the experimental Krautrockers we know from Ege Bamyasi/Tago Mago/Future Days (not that those three sound the same).

Once again, it's "78th Avenue" by Earth and Fire. But this time, I feel compelled to explain why.
Isn't it just some vapid disco-era sellout trash by a band that used to be good? Well, it is disco-era, and it is disco-sounding, but something wonderful happens in this song, something that hits me where I live.
It begins sounding fairly generic disco-like, and has pretty ordinary lyrics about looking forward to a night on the town to go party down. And then the chorus comes. Jerney Kaagman sings in a soaring voice, "Don't let me down!", following it with these wonderful lines as the song turns to a sad, hopeful minor key: "Cause I'm sure the summer will make us feel like new / It's the only chance that we can get together / Just me and you". The "you" in the last line is held for a long time, turning to passionate "aaahhhhh"s as the band sympathetically repeats behind her "On 78th Avenue". They repeat this chorus like 5 times in the song (which only has 2 verses), and I could still listen to it all day. The melody and chord changes just work so well with the arrangement and lyrics.
See, it reminds me of the melodramatic romanticism of youth, where every night is anticipated as if the world depended on it, and everything seems twice as heavy and important as it really is. Let's say there's a girl I like, who seems to like me, but we've never really had the chance to spend a lot of time together. As school turns to summer, your resolve renews, your longing to connect becomes almost unbearable as you anticipate that meeting out on the town when you finally get some time alone with her. The summer.... a time of anticipation and hope. But ultimately, what often happens is missed opportunities, failure, and disappointments. You have seen a lot of this. Part of you knows it will probably happen again. But you hang on to that small chance like a lifeline. "Cause I'm sure the summer will make us feel like new...."
So yeah, I like this song.
I'd post a link but I don't want people to make fun of it. Look for it yrself on youtube if you're curious.
