Very sad, that was his keyboard sound that lure me to Deep Purple. If it wasn't for him, i wouldn't listen to this band.

For me it was Ritchie Blackmore and his sweet guitar. I always thought Lord a bit....meh.....but appreciated him more later.

Just saw this on another site. RIP Jon. Though he as well as many others of his time had some classical aspirations and/or pretentions, no one else, not Emerson, not Wakeman, could flat out play heavy rock quite like Jon. The sound is well preserved on DP In Rock.

Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon. |

I don't think I can put it into words. I just teared up reading the article though. RIP Jon. You were one of the best keyboardists we ever had.

He came across well in interviews as a genuine nice bloke. He admitted he couldn't have been like Keith Emerson and saw himself as a supporting player rather than a 'lead'. Child In Time amongst many great tracks is the one I like best for his playing. The best pure rock organist that ever lived. RIP Jon.

I can't believe it !
I have the first notes of "child in time" playing in my head. A great rock keyboardist, but also a good classical music composer. RIP

Keith Moon will join them for some drum fills.
Sad news indeed, RIP Jon, but I always think that we all have to die so the point is having lived a rich and purposeful life, and he certainly can claim having succeeded.

Wow. Just one of those times, when you realise you've been asleep, and suddenly woken up to face reality. This does really sadden me. Such a waste...

A very underrated one, if you ask me. His "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" is reasonably well known, but the superior (IMO) "Gemini Suite" is rarely mentioned. I used to have it on vinyl and played the hell out of it as a teenager. Worth checking out, if you've yet to do so. RIP. |

^There's nothing wrong in having two drummers in the same band. The Allman Brothers did, if I'm not mistaken. On secong thought, Bonham's and Moon's off stage behaviour could be too much to handle for the bandleader
