Yes, it is unfortunate the mix is muddy/bassy. I did some remixing in Adobe Audition and it helped a lot if the bass is lowered and the mid highs are elevated.

Sorry lads, I found this new one to be uninspired. Was really looking forward to it to. Certainly not a bad album, but not one I can see returning to after a few more listens.

I have listened to the album five times now and I think it is one of the best albums the band has released. I own all of the studio albums (including the Feedback EP) and all of the live albums with the exception of 'Time Machine: Live in Cleveland'. So, I am not making this claim lightly.
I like the beefy production. I don't think the detail in sound is sacrificed, but I guess it depends what you are listening to the album on. I much prefer this kind of production to that on......say..'Roll the Bones', which to my ears sounds a little thin.
Obviously sound preference is very much a subjective thing and for me 'Clockwork Angels' sounds just great!

CWA DR=8, however it really doesn't clip that much. it's just a sh*tty, lifeless mix and master. it's so sad because it really gets in the way of the music. it just sounds like they're playing behind a glass wall and everything is turned all the way up while neil sits in the back playing a tiny drum set. some really good songs though. i de-clipped it which helped with listening fatigue.

This got to be one of the most chuggy sounding album by Rush, the riffs in BU2B album mix are quite heavy... I don't recall hearing Rush doing these kind of riffs too often. All in all... I loved 'Clockwork Angels', although I'm not too found on the sound mixing, in most of the songs it sounds just too messy, but in tracks like the album namesake and The Garden, the production is almost crystal clear.

Rush have never recorded a bad album - they are all good, and some of them are great. Presently I think that Clockwork Angels is a great album. However, I have decided to listen to every studio album again in order of release before I listen to it again (will probably take me a couple of weeks). Then, the next time I listen to Clockwork Angels it will be with the clearest perspective I can muster. Then I will be able to decide if the album is amongst the very best of the Rush canon.

an interesting project. I've found that when a new Rush album is released I can go back and listen to an older one that hadn't quite licked and which suddenly makes sense as bridge between styles. Hold Your Fire was like that for me - I really liked Power Windows, didn't find HYF all that interesting but loved Presto and then rediscovered and enjoyed HYF much better second time around.

I'll save you the weeks of trouble and tell you it's not.
Out of their 20 albums, i'd put it around 13.

I'd put it somewhere in the top half...but that might change in a month or two once the excitement of it being not bad at all has worn off.

It's decent just nothing breath-taking or really interesting. What a shame. S&A was so much better.

interesting... S&A didn't grab me at all. don't get me wrong, I think it has a few decent tracks but for me it is not a cohesive or compelling album.

Seems for those that do not like CA.....it has turned them on better to S&A, which is cool as I always found that album to be very, very good. pretty much all the S&A songs are top notch and sounds excellent very loud too!
As well does CA.....loud is better

Since posting last I have listened up to and including A Farewell to Kings - only five albums in and I think my elevated opinion of Clockwork Angels might be diminishing a little. I'm really enjoying this little project. Tomorrow night I will listen to Hemispheres and Permanent Waves. I have never been that keen on side one of Hemispheres. I always felt that the music lacked focus and the Apollo / Dionysus dichotomy a little hackneyed. But, I'm really keen to hear it again now. The release of Clockwork Angels has really opened my ears to some of the band's earlier albums that I haven't heard for years.

I've been a fan of S&A since it's release. Best thing they have done since Hold Your Fire.

Besides Xanadu, side one of hemispheres is my fav!
Fwiw, I deamplified and clip fixed cwa on audacity and was able to get some songs up to DR: 12! So much easier to listen to and enjoy the songs.

I did finally receive my copy of the vinyl version.....I am not liking it very much, the sound is well yes "loudness wars". I suspect it is a needle drop and not a pressing from the original recordings. I could have done a better job on my own, but what do you expect from RoadRunner Records. Pretty much everything I have from them on vinyl is not good. Dream Theater BC&SL is pretty good....the rest not so.
The vinyl is cool to have but will not see as many spins as the CD, which in this case does sound more alive and open.
It did come with a FLAC digital download coupon so that more than makes up for the vinyl. My external DAC will playback at 24bit/96khz so it sounds pretty damn nice!
