I have all the albums from the debut to Grace Under Pressure. I also have Counterparts and Snakes & Arrows. I've heard Power Windows and Roll the Bones, but don't own them. I haven't been in a big Rush mood in a long time, but from what I remember, my favorites are the classics. 2112, A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Moving Pictures. I also enjoy Signals and Fly By Night from time to time. I like Snakes & Arrows, but it doesn't go on often, and I can't remember the last time I listened to Grace Under Pressure or Counterparts. |

Gazing up at my Rush calendar, the owl's eyes stare at me as if to say, what the heck are you doing on PA again when you were on it all night? I ask myself the same question as I wipe the sleep from my eyes, feeling like I had been on the turps all night, but I don't drink anymore.... The Cd has been on repeat over 3 solid days - in between playing my new Eloy albums which I love also. I played CA just now and was floored by the production quality and the overall musical content. Lee just sang, "in the fullness of time a garden to nurture and protect" and the words just take on such a weight.... it is quite an achievement for a band that has been travelling as long as they have over 5 decades and 20 albums of incredible music. I don't care if it does not appeal to everyone - It wont! But it touched me in a way that confirmed Rush as my all time favourite band! So my top Rush albums are now: 1 MOVING PICTURES 2 A FAREWELL TO KINGS 3 CLOCKWORK ANGELS 4 PERMANENT WAVES 5 HEMISPHERES 6 COUNTERPARTS 7 2112 8 GRACE UNDER PRESSURE 9 SIGNALS 10 CARESS OF STEEL

Hey do you Rushaholics agree with this statement on 7 Cities of Gold:
I never considered this before - but is it a psychedelic section reminiscent of 2001 - that is interesting.... taken from review on http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/rush-clockwork-angels-full-album-reviewed-track-by-track-542931/8 " Seven Cities Of Gold contains nods to Rush's past, but the whole thing feels incredibly alive and vital, with a dazzling assortment of riffs that dodge and weave, rise and fall. The middle section is a sea of psychedelia - it's not outwardly trippy or retro, but it's disorienting, the aural equivalent of the light show in 2001: A Space Odyssey. A mind-blower, and by the end, all three members are kicking up major dirt. |

I learned from our Flower King thread that there is no way to know if a person will like a new record or not, however... Seeing your RUSH collection I do think a key element is poignant here. Zumacraig aptly pointed out that Geddy has been composing on the last several CDs outside of a major key which he did on all the records that you have (and that I have & love, for what it is worth...) Geddy now writes mostly with minor & dissonant intervals like so many of today's alt rock and metal bands, What are Geddy's reasons to write this way? Those are his. But....this point does explain why the last 4 RUSH records sound so different than the older stuff. Plus RUSH seemed to condemn the older more classical form of writing and moved to almost an exclusive pop verse chorus verse format. The song Animate from Counterparts is a perfect example. Animate is pure commercial product, verse chorus verse with fade out chorus repeatedly. One may like this or hate it but you can't debate the pure commercialism of this switch. If you love Xanadu or 2112, chances are you want a bit more than verse chorus verse ad nauseam for 3.5 minutes, it stands to reason. Here's my point: The new CD seems to be a mix of the old style of writing in a major mode and a continuation of the modern era minor/dissonant mode. Track 1 is modern, track 3 is classic RUSH, etc.... So it is a mix. My point is: I think you would enjoy parts of Clockwork Angels and not like other parts. The RUSH fan who loves all their records from RUSH to Snakes & Arrows will go absolutely crazy over this and will be in Heaven with Clockwork Angels. Just my $.02 after playing Clockwork Angels about 10 times. Cheers! DM |

^^^ It is an interesting read on that website and I like his ideas. I didnt read any of the professional reviews before reviewing the album as I didt want to be persuaded by any of their ideas and opinions. Theres some great reviews now online and worth wading through as you listen. i am listening to Rush LIve R30 now for the first time and like the live sound. Its very raw after hearing the polished CA production.

Spot on! I think all Rush fans will gain tremendous enjoyment from this as it captures the 70s feel and still maintains a modern approach. Absolutely crazy over this album for sure! Its now loaded online and fans are raving about it! It's worth reading the comments on facebook, youtube and soon amazon will have some reviews - they wont allow any yet but its OUT! I havent heard a bad word about it yet. If anyone posts a negative 1 star review it will make for some light hearted comic relief though....

Haha, thanks on the shout-out on the name! Back to the Future rules! All three of 'em. ![]() No, I have not heard the 5.1 Fly by Night yet, but while you might not like the mix of the later stuff as much as the early stuff, I think it is unfair to lump Counterparts into the same group as Vapor Trails. Might I suggest giving all of CP another good listen on a good stereo? ;)

Title track is the bomb! Great release overall. Deserving of a high ranking here.
(Sidenote: Pissed I didn't get all the replies the last few days...is there a fix in settings so I can get notified for each response?) |

Also, I am a bit disappointed with the production/mix. I believe Steven Wilson could have made this release over-the-top awesome sonically.

I'd love to hear Steven Wilson mix a Rush album, and he could have made this one sound better, but this is still a good-sounding CD, just not great because it is a bit too hot at times. Still a pretty great overall record, though. I literally cannot get enough of it.

Not 'good' reasons as I have all the software to do that Its mostly down to habit and HDD / SD card Space - though that is less of an issue than it used to be, I do a lot of my listening on the go or in the gym. |

good points DM. this new one at least has some memorable melodies and some major key parts. as far as the verse chorus stuff goes, one could argue that they've been doing that since Grace Under Pressure. at least they still had catchy tunes up to Counterparts. then it was grunge all the way :) which gave way to Nickleback-esqe stuff in the 00s. now i could care less. i love listening to ged's bass, alex's guitar, and neil's drums in any context...having some catching songs or awesome riffs are icing on the cake at this point. my point, clockwork is great and i have a feeling i'm gonna wear this thing out...something i haven't done in a while :-)
