Something that I love to do is support music made by a friend. Even more than that, I love when I love my friends' music and want to support it, which is the usual case with Vompatti. He's a very artistically interesting and genuinely nice kind of guy that I sadly don't get to talk to much anymore, but I know that I can look forward to hearing new music by him, like the new release titled The Unknown Arcana of the Cryptical Sky, a nearly 66-minute electronic experiment in industrial ambience and subtle noise. Compared to his previous albums, this one is less "in your face" and more distant.

The music on this album makes me think of the hikikomori (ひきこもり), which is a term that refers to the Japanese phenomenon of young adults who have basically decided that they've had enough of the pressure from the world and its people, and choose to live in a state of complete social withdrawal, sometimes not leaving their apartments for months or even years. They're usually funded by their parents who want to keep their son's and daughter's lives afloat somehow. The reason I think of the hikikomori is because I'm generally prone to morbid thoughts, but also because of the atmosphere this album gives off. The whole hour kind of sounds like being locked in a dark, secluded area, safe from whatever is making the unsettling noises that can be heard in the distant "outside" through the walls and gray ambience of my "happy place". It's like watching an imminent doom from a safe distance, being able to see and understand the terror, but also knowing that no harm will be done to me personally, except for maybe some residual psychological damage.

I personally live in a semi-secluded way, generally preferring not to leave the safety of my shadowy box, because I know that this world is full of many kinds of people and dangers, all of which I would love to avoid entirely for fear of my life and the anxious sweat that I will probably be drenched in by the day's end. Listening to The Unknown Arcana of the Cryptical Sky is a sweet confirmation that, yes, others probably feel the same way I do, whether that's a good thing or bad. I have no idea if Vomps is an anxious mess like I am, but it is always a plus when an artist can create music to which I can attach my own meaning, and hopefully you will have a similarly meaningful response.
