Like, electronic dance music with emphasis on the bass. I've actually never listened to ABBA.

Pointless label, just like "Christian music." There is nothing inherent in music that makes it religious, and there is nothing inherent in music that makes it homosexual. |

The remarkable Sara Lee, with Robert Fripp and the League of Gentlemen!! I was VERY into the punk scene of Chicago during this era, and there were some rather amazing experiments, fusing jazz/rock with raw punk rhythms!
When I auditioned to play bass with The Marquis', the first bass line I threw at guitarist Todd was Wetton's line from "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part 2"! I was offered the bassists slot but opted to stay in graduate school (*sob!!*) ...the path not taken! But hey, who's ever heard of The Marquis'? Enjoy! |

Just a thought, does an individual's sexual orientation have any impact on their opinions and perceptions outside the realm of erm...'affairs of the heart' or 'gender politics' e.g. are gay people predisposed to supporting certain political ideologies?

In the US we have a group called Log Cabin Republicans, who are gay conservatives. Edited by Slartibartfast - March 19 2012 at 08:32 |

For years, in France, it was thought that homosexual people would vote for the French Socialist Party since it was the president François Mitterand which fully legalized homosexuality in 1981. But, as many surveys tend to show it, gay people seem to tend to vote for the UMP, the French conservative movement. In fact, we can suppose that the sexual orientation is just ONE factor in the choice of political affiliation. Or musical tastes, because this is what we're supposed to discuss in this thread. |

There is a group called GOP Pride or something similar and in 2011 America had its first gay man run for president, Fred Karger, a republican. He was completely ignored by the Republican press machine. (He was also unqualified imo- a witty, interesting guy though.) |

Karger made the news today though, because he finished ahead of Ron Paul in the Puerto Rico primary yesterday.

I remember back last year I wanted to do an LGBT pride version of my radio show to commemorate gay marriage passing in new york and being at a total loss, playing a sigur ros song and being like well that's all I've got. It seemed strange to me the lack of presence of the LGBT community in the prog world.

Oh, yeah, there was Peter Christopherson. So, we could also mention Coil, even if they're not in the PA database. |

As a gay man I thank you for your support. My first post on this website asked about gays in progressive rock, but from your OP I see this question was asked before my time here. My impression that Prog Rock fans would be more open-minded than their "non-Prog-Rock" counterparts. I think this is proving true. Edited by catfood03 - March 19 2012 at 19:50 |

I've had that assumption too, considering that progressive rock kind of encourages intelligence to some degree, and I believe intelligence encourages equality. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it personally.

You are very welcome here! This is a wide-open forum, no holds barred from what I can tell. We are nice people! If you know of other gay prog/rock artists, please share! There is still much stigma in the rock industry I think. I'm familiar with the Indigo Girls (Sara Lee has played with them), the amazing Bob Mould of Hüsker Dü and Sugar, and maybe a few others in rock & country, but not many in prog. Cheers, Chuck |

If we are going to go within and outside the parameters of Progressive Rock for openly gay artists then we'd have quite a seemingly endless list. ![]() |

My assumption was based on what I perceived as "feminine" qualities of Prog Rock, like extended flute-solos or the overly theatrical clothing and staging of some of the concert performances. I think I remember Tony Banks referring to Wind and Wuthering as a "feminine" album. Even Yes named one of their albums "Drama"! HellllOOOooo! ![]() |
