It is once again time for America's Favorite Pastime:  Major League Baseball.  As with previous years, this thread is the thread to talk all things major league baseball.  Hopefully, many of these discussions will start off: "Did you see how far Prince Fielder hit that home run!!!!"

All things are pointed towards my Tigers having a great season this year.  Angels and Rangers will both be tough this year.  And the Yanks and Red Sox will be there at the end, as always.

I'm not really thrilled with the new playoff format.  The only thing that a 2nd Wild Card team does is give the Red Sox or Yanks a chance to make the playoffs in a year where the Rays or Jays end up surprising them with a good year.  The one game playoff is probably a huge advantage for the number 1 seed team, as the wild card team that they play will probably have to use their best pitcher in the play-in game in order to assure that they make the playoffs.

Anyhow, GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  and post away.

Well the Yanks will be in the playoffs as always, will we get past the first round? This is the questionLOL
Still got A Rod, Swisher and Teixeira aka the Trifecta of post season failure.

But we did dump AJ! For once..the opposite has happened and the Yanks gave a player to the PiratesLOL and the general reaction here was "THANK GOD!" or "lolgood take him"
An NL team, with low expectations...this may be good for him. He was already an average pitcher and could not handle New York.

We'll see. We all know baseball is the most mental sport, and somehow some key Yanks need to jump their mental hurdles, and the overall team needs to gel (which has never really happened since A Rod came and especially when he upset Jeter).

ALSO RYAN BRAUN DID STEROIDS! Or did he? Honestly, havn't really followed the story but everyone is saying he got off a failed test on a technicality? Some "administrative loophole" or something. I'm sure he did it, and now when we though they were at least cracking down, questions can be raised about testing itself? What a messCry

I don't know what to believe with Ryan Braun.  He has just always sounded adamant that he didn't do steroids and that the test was a mistake.  I was watching ESPN and one of the people that they talked to said that the results that the tests came back with were fairly impossible.  I don't recall the details, but it was something like the tests showed his system had 5 or 10 times the steroids level that a normal positive test would reveal.  Kind of as though the steroids were poured directly into the sample.  I haven't really read or saw anything else regarding that though.  Unfortunately, the fact that he was cleared because of a technicality will always leave that question mark, even if he truly is innocent.

On a happier note, the Tigers are now 4 and 0 after beating the team formerly known as Florida 3 to 1 today.

Ahhhh yes another sub-sub-sub par outlook for the Seattle Mariners. We should get swept by the Angels and possibly Rangers. I'd be happy to go 500 against the A's.
We made no moves worth noting.

And why we did not offer Manny a 1yr contract makes no sense to me!!? I kept saying..."give him $700K, and another $700K for 30HR/80RBI (SEA had nobody in the top 50 for RBI's).

The only reason to go to a game at Safeco will be to see Pujols literally hit one outta Safeco.

I'm already done with MLB 2012...... Angry

Well, Carlos Guillen announced his retirement today, so apparently he won't be having a career resurgence in Seattle this year.

The question I believe everyone is asking is: "Will manofmystery's baseball predictions be as good as his football predictions?"

Philthadelphia Phillies: 99-63
Atlanta Braves: 91-71
Miami Marlins: 85-77

CENTRAL (this is a tough one because I don't think any of these teams are particularly good):
Cincinnati Reds: 90-72
Milwaukee Brewers: 86-76
St. Louis Still-Gonna-Throw-at-Ryan-Braun's-Head: 85-77
Pittsburgh Suckos: 76-86
Chicago Cubs: 74-88
Houston Astros: 60-102

WEST:
LA We-Gotta-Get-Outta-Here-Now-to-Beat-Traffic: 92-70
Arizona Diamondbacks: 91-71
San Fran Giants: 84-78
Colorado Rockies: 80-82
San Diego Padres: 69-93

AL
EAST:
New York Yankees: 96-65
Tampa Bay Rays: 93-69
Boston AA: 89-73
Toronto Blue Jays: 73-89
Baltimore Birdies: 70-92

CENTRAL:
Detroit Tigers: 101-61
Chicago White Sox: 84-78
Minnesota Twins: 76-86
KC Royals: 74-88
Cleveland Indians: 72-90

WEST:
Texas Rangers: 95-67
LA Ridiculous Names: 94-68
Seattle Mariners: 69-93

I'm sure the math on this doesn't add up correctly but what do you want?  Who else is going to give you this detailed a projection on the music forum?

While I believe you pegged the Giants at 9-7 (was it?) I don't think you predicted SB win.

Yeah that reminds me, what was that crap I heard about banning alcohol in Boston's locker room?
Did they have some issue with it?
After that glorious collapse they needed it.  :D

^ The regular season means nothing....its a glorified. extended pre-season. What is it now, a 1/3 of the teams will make the playoffs now?

Fair enough, guess I should've said "did you really expect it?"

And yeah, can't say I'm really happy with more teams in the playoffs.
Watch Tampa win the division again, while 2 other teams take the wild card...think they'll just amend the rule to say "Let in the Yankees and Red Sox"?

It's been hard for me to care much about what goes on until the post-season gets near.  Having so many games per season of course waters down the importance of any one game (in stark contrast to NFL football), and the new playoff rules now, as you mentioned, add more wild cards into the pot.  Back when I religiously followed baseball statistics, it was fun to check out box scores and batting/pitching stats in the paper, but now that I care less about that, there's little reason to really pay close attention.

The Braves are my team.  They're not the dominant team they were in the 1990s, and our city has gotten in the habit of poo-pooing the team any time they fall short of getting to the World Series (which is most of the time now).  There are some great young players on the Braves now, including last year's Rookie of the Year (closer Craig Kimbrell) and the close runner up (1st baseman Freddie Freeman).  We've always had a pretty good to great pitching staff, but the batting has been pretty weak in recent years.  I'm hoping some of these guys can start hitting more consistently.  Last year's end-of-season collapse was almost admirable in its total and utter unthinkable crappiness.

I sincerely doubt that the Tigers win 100 games.

They are by far the best team in the worst division of a very top-heavy league.

Also, I agree with seemingly everyone here that the playoff expansion is a bad idea.  I'd say moronic, myself.  Playing in the snow won't solve their current problem of baseball becoming irrelevant as soon as fantasy baseball playoffs end (seriously, it's the only thing keeping the league alive).

I mean yeah, playoffs lose a bit of their meaning when you allow too many in. Winner of each division, and a wild card is fine.
Even though you now have more teams, and thus more chance of someone making a crazy playoff run, if loses its fun when they have no right being there.
Ah well! We can't gripe too much. The moment one of our teams makes the playoffs through the second wild card and goes on to win the WS we'll be celebrating and trying to tell others  "hey its just how the rules are now stfu"
LOL
