Not being a great expert on subgenres at the best of times, and seeing this music described as 'Progressive Death/Doom Metal', which ain't really one of our options, I'm at a bit of a loss where to suggest filing this lot (assuming they get added of course...!) On their facebook page the band class themselves as 'Obscure Heavy Metal', whatever that may be, so now I'm now even more confused.  Confused

This suggestion actually follows on from one made earlier today for Woburn House by let prog reign. Valborg share the same label (Zeitgeister Music) with Woburn House, and it appears that this band employ 'deliberately exclusive distribution methods' for some strange reason.

For a full introduction to the band, read this excellent in depth review of their latest album 'Barbarian' by Jordan Campbell at metalreview.com: http://metalreview.com/reviews/6159/valborg-barbarian. He too has problems classifying them, it seems!

They have four albums out: 'Songs For A Year' (2005), 'Glorification Of Pain' (2009), 'Crown Of Sorrow' (2010), & 'Barbarian' (2011), though they don't list the first one on their facebook page or band website, and samples of it are few and far between.

Websites:
http://soundcloud.com/zeitgeistermusic/sets/valborg (where you will find links to some other stuff by similar bands on the Zeitgeister label, including Woburn House).

YouTube samples:

And there are more samples to be found on YouTube too.

I'm guessing they will go in Experimental/Post Metal, though I really haven't got a clue!! - I'm sure they ought to be on here somewhere though...Andy, Alex, Karl?

Edit: Read this excellent interview with singer/guitarist Christian Kolf of Valborg by Lords Of Metal E-zine, from May 2010, where he explains the reason why the band class their first album as a demo: http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/showinterview.php?id=3289&lang=en - the article says to file under black/pagan metal, so that's now confusing me even more...

Love 'em. Very dark of course, swimming in doom-laden reverb, but smatterings of non-dissonant major harmony break it up.

They could somewhere in the minimalist category for all the repetition. Not quite drone, but minimalist definitely.

Wow this sounds great. Doom-death, but with some strong Tech element. I'm not sure yet from the quick skimming through it but my best guess would be Tech/Extreme.
